Choice Card confusion frustrates veterans, Congress

Air Force veteran Mark Gendron lives just a few miles from a psychiatrist who can help treat his post-traumatic stress disorder. But Veterans Affairs Department officials won't pay for the treatment. Gendron is one of tens of thousands of veterans left scratching their heads about the VA's new Choice Card program, designed to give veterans in remote areas or those facing long wait times a chance to easily turn to private care providers.

Task & Purpose
For most service members, even for those who served 20-plus years, your military service will come to an end before the age of professional retirement and you'll have to find second, even third careers. The job market for former officers and most retired senior noncommissioned officers remains a steady source for employment. But, what about the enlisted? Let’s not discuss jobs. Instead, let's discuss careers, which is much more beneficial for all former service members.

Proposed legislation looks to help veterans with higher ed

The first legislation proposed by Gov. Bobby Jindal, R-La., this year looks to give veterans an advantage with higher education. Two bills announced recently hope to make Louisiana a leader in supporting veterans' educational careers. Making it easier for veterans to transition into Louisiana schools and eventually into the workforce.

The Department of Veterans Affairs' chief watchdog has not publicly released the findings of 140 health care investigations since 2006, potentially leaving dangerous problems to fester without proper oversight, a USA Today analysis of VA documents found.

MDVA: Minnesota moves toward goal of ending veteran homelessness

With 300 days remaining in 2015, the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs announces the launch of a statewide Registry focused on housing veterans experiencing homelessness. MDVA, together with Gov. Mark Dayton's Cabinet-Level Interagency Council on Homelessness, set this goal as a part of the state's Plan to Prevent and End Homelessness in Minnesota by the end of 2015.
