U.S. Senators Introduce 4G Bill

U.S. Senators Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., and Al Franken, D-Minn., introduced the Next Generation Wireless Disclosure Act, which will require wireless providers to disclose complete and accurate information about their 4G wireless data service in their sales and advertising practices. The bill mirrors legislation introduced by Rep. Anna G. Eshoo, D-Calif., in the House of Representatives this past June. The act would require wireless companies to disclose the following details in their marketing and advertising at the point of sale and in all billing materials: Guaranteed minimum data speed, network reliability, coverage area maps, pricing, technology used to provide 4G service, network conditions that can impact the speed of applications and services used on the network. The legislation will further require the FCC to evaluate the speed and price of 4G wireless data service provided by the top 10 U.S. wireless carriers. More

AT&T: Our LTE Phones Will Be Thinner, More Efficient

WCAI member AT&T's lineup of 4G LTE smartphones will be thinner and more power-efficient than current devices on the market, Ralph de la Vega, chief executive of AT&T's wireless and consumer unit, told CNET. The company's first 4G LTE smartphones, which will launch in the fourth quarter, will use a new technology that allows for phones with a slimmer profile that last longer without a recharge. The availability of the technology drove the timing of the phones' release. More



Alvarion Upgrades MSTelcom's WiMAX Capabilities in Angola

Angola Communications Systems, a unit of Angolan telco MSTelcom, has chosen WCAI member Alvarion's BreezeMAX Extreme WiMAX solution to upgrade and expand its wireless broadband network, with a WiMAX 802.16e (mobile-ready) deployment, operating in the 4.9 GHz frequency range. ACS's new network will provide broadband services to Luanda business customers, to local municipalities and to various provincial towns and villages as last mile access. "Expanding beyond a traditional carrier model, service providers like ACS are enabling both rural and urban Africa to move forward at a rapid pace," said Eran Gorev, president and CEO of Alvarion. The contract is worth around $2 million. More

Clearwire Expects 3Q Revenue Above Street; Shares Up

WCAI member Clearwire projected third-quarter revenue above Wall Street's views and suggested subscriber growth will likely exceed its goals for the year, though it detailed a declining cash position. The company's shares were up 18 percent at $1.53 in early trading. Clearwire sees revenue of $332 million for the third quarter, above recent views of analysts polled by Thomson Reuters for $322 million. Clearwire also expects its net wholesale subscriber additions to grow 29 percent sequentially, bringing total subscribers to 9.5 million by the quarter's end. The company also disclosed it had cash and investments of about $700 million as of Sept. 30. It ended the second quarter at about $848 million. More



Everything, Everywhere & BT Trial a 4G LTE Network in Cornwall

Everything, Everywhere, the parent company that formed when U.K. network's T-Mobile and Orange merged, has joined forces with BT to trial 4G LTE broadband in Cornwall. Under the trial, which was first announced in May this year, the two companies will use 10 MHz of the test 800 MHz spectrum, which currently is used for terrestrial TV broadcasts, to bring wireless Internet access to around 200 residents in the in St. Newlyn East and the surrounding areas of South Newquay. The trial, which according to Everything, Everywhere will offer Internet access for both 100 mobile and 100 fixed broadband customers, already has commenced and will run until early next year. More

Etisalat Academy Introduces Huawei's Certified LTE Programs to the Middle East

Etisalat Academy, the largest single-source provider of training and development solutions in the Middle East, has introduced the first certified LTE program in the Middle East region in partnership with Huawei. The aim is for Etisalat Academy to develop a community of highly skilled and certified professionals who have a comprehensive understanding of LTE pertaining to "commercialization, operation and maintenance, planning and optimization." ZTE and Altair Semiconductor Collaborate on 4G Trial in Japan

Altair Semiconductor, a developer of ultra-low power, small footprint and high performance 4G LTE chipsets, announced that it has teamed up with ZTE to conduct a joint AXGP trial in Japan. The trial combines Altair's commercial LTE chipset and ZTE's infrastructure and is being performed in conjunction with a Japanese carrier. More
