On Oct. 20, Verizon's 4G LTE network will be available in the Birmingham market. It's part of an aggressive plan by Verizon to have 4G LTE coverage match its 3G coverage by the end of 2013, said Steve Leonard, Verizon's data director for Alabama/Georgia. In addition to Birmingham, Verizon has launched 4G LTE in Montgomery, Mobile, Huntsville and Decatur. By the end of 2012, Leonard said that 4G should be as easy to find as 3G is now. More

Sweden's 4G Spectrum Auction Gets Under Way

Teliasonera and Net4Mobility were the winners in the first of a two-stage 4G spectrum auction in Sweden. TeliaSonera paid €101 million (US $139 million) for five 2x25 MHz blocks of 1800 MHz spectrum, while Net4Mobility — a joint venture between Telenor and Tele2 founded in 2009 — spent €47 million (US $65 million) on two 2x10 MHz blocks. U.S. Wireless Initiative Stalls New Billing Rules

The U.S. wireless industry is rolling out more consumer-friendly billing practices, fending off a plan by communications regulators to impose new rules against unexpected charges. Guidelines to be unveiled Monday by the wireless trade association will see companies send alerts to customers when they near and reach monthly limits on voice, text and data services, and before they incur international roaming charges.
