Volcano's effects prove importance of managing supply chain risk
DC Velocity Share
Even in daylight, Eyjafjallajökull makes quite an impression. I saw the fiery Icelandic volcano outside my airplane window as I flew back last month from the CSCMP Europe 2010 Conference. The
volcano had erupted a few days earlier, threatening to cancel my flight, but it had subsided enough to permit air travel. Recently the volcano erupted again, spewing clouds of volcanic ash that the eastward jet stream carried across the skies of northern Europe. Because the particles in that ash can knock out a jet engine, many airports were shut down. More

In this "Voice of the Experts" Q&A, Healthcare Packaging talks with Dan Gagnon, director of the Healthcare Logistics Strategy Group at UPS,
about distribution factors, regulatory issues, and trends in temperature-sensitive shipping. NASFM drops all code
enforcement efforts related to pallets
Material Handling Management
Share

Admitting that it "underestimated the complexity of the issues and the parties involved," the National Association of State Fire Marshals officially has abandoned all efforts to develop code enforcement guidance regarding fire safety and pallet composition. In a recent letter sent to Bob Moore, CEO of plastic pallet supplier Intelligent Global Pooling Systems, NASFM President Alan Shuman confirmed the organization has permanently
dropped all efforts to pursue the "controversial project."

Customer centricity vs. the front-office/back-office fallacy
CRM Buyer
Share

The old cliche is that CRM is supposed to give you a 360-degree view of your customers. I debate that -- I think it gives, at best, a
couple of overlapping 270-degree views, and 30 degrees always will be hidden. However, that's all geometric digression. My real point is this: Having a 360-degree view of your customers isn't worth a hill of beans unless you can couple that with a 360-degree view of your own organization.

Supply chain collaboration 2010: Buy, sell or hold?
Supply Chain Digest
Share

Is there really any more vexing topic than supply chain collaboration? Every couple of
years, I write a column on this subject, and my own views continue to shift -- although this year, I have some new clarity. I will admit to being a bit of a cynic. There is simply too much blah, blah, blah in the discussion of collaboration, from my view.

Top 3PLs find savings on path to environmental sustainability
Fleet Owner

A detailed analysis of so-called sustainability programs launched by many global third-party logistics providers finds most are maintaining and even expanding such efforts largely
as a result of the costs savings they've generated. The "Third Party Logistics Sustainability Report" compiled by Robert Lieb, professor of Supply Chain Management at Northeastern University and Kristin Lieb, assistant professor of marketing communication for Emerson College, shows that many large 3PLs increased their commitments to developing greener practices and building environmental sustainability programs despite the global recession of 2008 and 2009.
