The Dane County Board of Supervisors has issued an amendment to the county code of ordinances prohibiting the possession and sale of exotic animals. This ordinance amendment does not provide a specific list of these animals. The proposal has been referred to four Board of Supervisor committees and awaits further action. The proposed ordinance amendment defines an exotic animal as "any animal that is not normally domesticated in the United States, including any such animal's hybrid with domestic species, or an animal that is wild by nature, regardless of whether it was bred in the wild or captivity." Anemic growth of American consumers' per capita disposable income during the recent economic downturn did not adversely affect dog and cat ownership — or the pet sector's bottom line — according to a February 2012 special report by Santa Monica, Calif.-based market research firm IBISWorld. Per capita disposable income increased by 1.5 percent from $32,713 in 2007 to $33,197 in 2008; however, it took a 3.2 percent dive in 2009, according to the United States Department of Commerce's Bureau of Economic Analysis.
