from The Baton Rouge Advocate U.S. sales of pet insurance jumped 20 percent each year from 2003 to 2007, when they hit around $210 million, according to Packaged Facts, a market research firm based in New York. By 2012, the sales for the United States and Canada are expected to range from $756 million to $1.1 billion.

MGP Ingredients Announces Sale of KC Facility, Pet Business to Seargeant's
from Comtex via Fox Business MGP Ingredients, Inc. has announced the sale of its Kansas City, Kan., facility to Sergeant's Pet Care Products, Inc. The sale was completed for an initial payment of $3.6 million, with provision for additional earn out payments to be paid over time. The sale includes all equipment used for the production and packaging of pet-related products, which principally include extruded plant-based resins and finished pet treats.

Spay/Neuter Legislation Passes California Senate
from PIJAC Senate Bill 250 was introduced earlier in this year's session and was amended several times in the Senate before a last minute passage. The bill provides licensing requirements for unaltered dogs/dogs and allows local governments to set licensing fees and penalties. SB 250 is set to be heard before the Assembly Committee on Appropriations on Aug. 27 at the Call of the Chair.

Petsmart Same Store Sales Up Slightly in Second Quarter
from Pet Product News Petsmart Inc. of Phoenix, Ariz., reported its same-store sales for its second quarter ended Aug. 2 increased slightly by 0.8 percent and expects same-store sales to remain flat during its third quarter. For 2009, the company expects same-store sales growth will be in the low-single digits.

Pet Care Tax Deduction Drawing Mostly Laughs
from ohmidog! A new bill in the U.S. House that would allow pet owners to deduct up to $3,500 for “qualified pet-care expenses,” including vet bills, is drawing little attention and lots of laughs. Called the HAPPY (Humanity and Pets Partnered Through the Years) Act, the bill is designed to make it more affordable for people to provide the care their pets need, and less likely that pet owners pinched by the recession will abandon their pets.

from The Pet Care Trust and WWPIA The Pet Care Trust has renewed its partnership with The Florida Aquarium to continue the Fish in the Classroom (FIC) program through 2010. Under the terms of the agreement, the Tampa, Florida based public aquarium will provide training for up to 50 teachers to incorporate tropical fish keeping into their classroom curriculum. The Pets in the Classroom program is nearing completion as well, and the Sue Busch Memorial Awards are announced.
