Card fee 'settlement' just start of big legal battle

Visa, Mastercard and a group of retailers plan to ask a judge this week to approve a landmark settlement of a lawsuit over credit card fees, setting the stage for a battle with Wal-Mart and hundreds of other merchants who say it is a bad deal. Announced in July, the $7.2 billion settlement is intended to resolve seven years of antitrust litigation between merchants and credit-card companies and their banks over so-called "swipe fees" that retailers pay to process credit card transactions. Animal behaviorist, inventor Robert Anderson dies at 90

Robert "R.K." Anderson, a revolutionary animal behaviorist, founder of the Animal Behavior Resources Institute and co-inventor of the Gentle Leader head collar and Easy Walk harness, died night at his Falcon Heights, Minn., home. He was 90. Anderson, DVM, MPH, Dipl. ACVB, Dipl. ACVPM, remained active until recently as an animal behaviorist and as a professor emeritus at the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine. More

Los Angeles City Council to consider retail pet ban

The Los Angeles City Council will hear and possibly vote on a proposal to ban the retail sale of any live dog, cat or rabbit within city limits at its meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 24. The proposal was passed (by a 3-0 vote) by the Personnel & Animal Welfare Committee on Oct. 2. PIJAC met with committee members and testified at the hearing in opposition to the proposal. More
