At least two-thirds of pet owners in the United States and Europe turn to their veterinarian or veterinary assistant about their pet's health, according to a new study by Grey Healthcare Group, a communications company in New York. The second most popular source for information is online (59 percent for the United States and Europe), followed by friends/family with pets (33 percent in the United States and 24 percent in Europe). The Texas Department of State Health Services has issued a proposed rulemaking addressing the transmission of Salmonella from reptiles to humans. Missouri voters narrowly approve anti-pet initiative

Rural Missouri voters flooded the polls in an effort to defeat a ballot initiative that will put dog breeders out of business. Indeed, for most of election night, returns suggested opponents of Proposition B might succeed. Ultimately, however, disproportionate support from heavily populated areas such as Jefferson and St. Louis resulted in passage of the initiative in a very close vote. More

Oklahoma proposes pet breeder regulations

The Commercial Pet Breeders Act, adopted earlier this year, established a Board of Commercial Pet Breeders which was charged with promulgating rules for licensing procedures of breeders and standards of care for animals subject to the act. The Breeders Board has now published a proposed rule and opened it up for public comment until the end of November. All those involved in, or concerned about, dog and cat breeding in the state of Oklahoma are strongly urged to review this PetAlert and to submit comments. More

Marshall acquires Earth's Balance brand

Marshall Pet Products, a Wolcott, N.Y.-based manufacturer of small animal, dog and cat products, reported that it has acquired the rights to the Earth's Balance pet product brand. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. The acquisition brings two new product categories — lawn care and avian — to Marshall and expands upon the company's exisiting dog and cat categories, said Diane Vair, Marshall's product marketing manager. Pet owners spending more on their animals

According to retail analysts Kantar Worldpanel, the growth of "pet pampering" has helped increase pet food sales by 6.7 per cent to a £1.5 billion in the past year. Cats in particular have benefited as more owners splash out on "gourmet" foods. The report says that the rise in "pet humanization" has also led to a 26.3 percent increase in the value of cat treat sales as owners show how much they care for their four-legged friends. More
