WiMAX Forum gets new president

The WiMAX Forum announced that effective Feb. 1 Ronald Resnick will retire from his role as the president of the WiMAX Forum. "Resnick has been a valued part of the WiMAX leadership for the past eight years," said Dr. Mohammad Shakouri, interim chairperson of the WiMAX Forum. "The WiMAX Forum would like to thank Resnick for building a strong foundation for this organization, which will continue its work in standardizing and certifying technology to bring broadband to underserved markets across the world." The WiMAX Forum is starting off 2012 with WiMAX Buenos Aires, the first in the 2012 WiMAX Forum Operator Summit Series. This event will take place Jan. 30-31 at the Marriott Plaza Buenos Aires, Argentina, and will be held concurrently with the WiMAX Forum Working Group Face-to-Face taking place Jan.30-Feb. 2. Homeowners and business owners who live within three miles of Florida's Hernando County Airport may soon have access to the Web for free. Barring any problems, the county would like to install a WiMAX equipment inside the airport complex — perhaps on top of the new 80-foot control tower — enabling anyone from within a three-mile radius to receive a signal and facilitate high-speed Internet connections. Austin, Texas, and Riverside, Calif., were two of the 2012 Top Seven Intelligent Communities of the Year just named by the Intelligent Community Forum along with three Canadian cities, one Finnish area, Finland, and one Chinese location. According to ICF, the top seven "are communities that provide a model of economic and social development in the 21st century using information and communications technology to power growth, address social challenges, and preserve and promote culture." MacBook users can now pick up dongles allowing them to access Northern Michigan University's WiMAX. The WiMAX dongles arrived at NMU in the beginning of December after many students requested them. However, only 195 out of 830 dongles have been picked up by MacBook users. More
