Greenpacket sees momentum with WiMAX

Greenpacket announced its momentum in the European WiMAX market, highlighting device deals with Italy's Aira and Bulgaria's Max Telecom. The vendor said that its WiMAX devices are now deployed in 1 in 3 European Union countries with growth occurring in countries such as Hungary, Italy, Portugal, Romania and Spain. More



Lepida, Aria to bring WiMAX to region of northern Italy

Italian regional communications operator Lepida has partnered with WiMAX operator Aria with the aim of resolving the digital divide problem in the northern Italy region of Emilia Romagna. Lepida will facilitate the provision by its member institutions, primarily municipalities, of the infrastructure, facilities and simple administrative procedures, in order to provide broadband access in 80 municipalities suffering from digital divide. Alepo, a U.S.-based company providing enabling infrastructure for telecommunications service providers, announced that it has entered into a partnership with Dimension Data to roll out 4G services across Zimbabwe for Utande, a local ISP. According to the announcement, Alepo and Dimension Data will build upon Utande's existing network to create a convergent network environment, enabling the delivery of 4G services over WiMAX, Wi-Fi and high-speed Metro Ethernet. Utande itself confirmed at the recently held EMC breakfast briefing that it will be launching its WiMAX platform commercially "soon" declining to give any specific dates. More

Alvarion acquires carrier-grade Wi-Fi player

Alvarion Ltd., a provider of wireless broadband solutions, announced that it would acquire privately-held Wavion, an Israel-based carrier-grade Wi-Fi applications provider, for approximately $30 million. Closing is expected before the end of 2011. Wavion's revenues for the last 12 months were approximately $16 million. More

UK MPs tell mobile operators to stop delaying 4G auction

U.K. mobile operators are under fire from a group of U.K. Members of parliament, who say the companies should stop delaying the spectrum auction that will allow 4G mobile services. "Ofcom has had a very difficult job adjudicating between competing and polarized interests, and we are concerned that constant disagreement and special pleading from the four mobile network operators appears to have further delayed the spectrum auction," said John Whittingdale MP, chair of the Commons Culture, Media and Sport select committee.
