Utande joins the 4G race — Alepo and Dimension Data working on the platform Techzim Share ![]() ![]() ![]()
Alepo, a U.S.-based company providing enabling infrastructure for telecommunications service providers, announced that it has entered into a partnership with Dimension Data to roll out 4G services across Zimbabwe for Utande, a local ISP. According to the announcement, Alepo and Dimension Data will build upon Utande's existing network to create a convergent network environment, enabling the delivery of 4G services over WiMAX, Wi-Fi and high-speed Metro Ethernet. Utande itself confirmed at the recently held EMC breakfast briefing that it will be launching its WiMAX platform commercially "soon" declining to give any specific dates. Alvarion Ltd., a provider of wireless broadband solutions, announced that it would acquire privately-held Wavion, an Israel-based carrier-grade Wi-Fi applications provider, for approximately $30 million. U.K. mobile operators are under fire from a group of U.K. Members of parliament, who say the companies should stop delaying the spectrum auction that will allow 4G mobile services. "Ofcom has had a very difficult job adjudicating between competing and polarized interests, and we are concerned that constant disagreement and special pleading from the four mobile network operators appears to have further delayed the spectrum auction," said John Whittingdale MP, chair of the Commons Culture, Media and Sport select committee.
