Hospitals may profit from small reductions in ED boarding time

Contrary to popular belief, results from a study show a one-hour reduction in the average emergency department boarding time could add millions of dollars per year in revenue for hospitals that implement active bed management strategies, according to an American College of Emergency Physicians news release. The rise in electronic medical records has given Brittany Fera, a premed student at Temple University, an "awesome" job that she had no idea existed before she saw an ad last year. The new record-keeping systems, which are touted as a way to improve efficiency and quality, slow down emergency medicine physicians so much that the doctors are hiring young people like Fera to input data for them. They call this growing group of employees "medical scribes." More

ACOEP joins the Emergency Medicine Action Fund

The American College of Osteopathic Emergency Physicians is the latest emergency medicine organization to join the Emergency Medicine Action Fund, which is working to impact health care reform's regulatory implementation and stop the potential threat to the independent practice of emergency medicine. ACOEP will contribute $50,000 over the next two years, and will join ACEP, AAEM, EMRA, and SAEM on the EM Action Fund Board of Directors, along with other emergency medicine organizations and physician groups of various sizes.
