Active Voice: Estrogen, Like Androgen, Can Affect Muscle Strength
Share

Active Voice is a column by ACSM experts in science, medicine, and allied health. The viewpoints expressed do not necessarily reflect positions or policies of ACSM.
Dawn Lowe, PhD, FACSM, is Associate Professor in the Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, University of Minnesota. Her research
focuses on cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying skeletal muscle deterioration in relation to age, injury and disease. See the April 2010 issue of ACSM's Exercise and Sports Sciences Reviews for a related research review she coauthored: "Mechanisms Behind Estrogen's Beneficial Effect on Muscle Strength in Females."
Estrogens and androgens are the primary sex hormones of females and males, respectively, and these hormones are quite different. Right? We recognize androgens as
anabolic steroids that influence the response of skeletal muscle to exercise in males. But what about estrogen’s influence on exercise and skeletal muscle in women? If you are not so sure about this answer, you are not alone.

Exercise and Sport Sciences Reviews (ESSR) has launched an online journal club. Beginning with the July issue, which is available now, each issue will feature discussion questions for a selected article. The journal club questions can be used by educators and students to gain a greater understanding and generate thought-provoking discussion of the topic. The selected article will be available for

Journal club questions are available where ever this icon appears:
In the July issue, go to the article "Nonhomeostatic Control of Human Appetite and Physical Activity in Regulation of Energy Balance" by Katarina T. Borer. Download the journal club questions by Barry Braun.

U.S. Embraces May as EIM Month
Share

May 2010 marked the third annual Exercise is Medicine Month, recognizing, emphasizing and celebrating on a national scale that exercise and physical activity are important to health
and the prevention and treatment of many chronic diseases. The observance of May as EIM Month allowed physicians, health and fitness professionals, supporting organizations and constituents to identify and create awareness that exercise is, indeed, medicine. It also provided an opportunity for communities to get involved and spread the word about the benefits of exercise. Many people celebrated Exercise is Medicine Month this May and became more physically active and healthy.

Wednesday evening Nicolas Mahut and John Isner finally got a break on the Wimbledon court when the sun went down. The two tennis players had been battling each other for the win for 10 hours.
"I’ve seen some long matches, but never to that extent," says Dr. Gary Wadler, a former physician with the U.S. Open Tennis Championships for 11 years. "It underscores how fit someone has to be to play at high-level tennis."

What made Larry Brown’s addiction acceptable was that it was, at least on the surface, good for him.
He was in his early 40s and running an impressive 50 miles a week. So what if it consumed him, if he thought about it even when his feet weren’t methodically hitting the pavement or carrying him across a finish line; so what if he became angry when the weather, or something else he couldn’t control, kept
him from his workout?
