Say it ain't so: Bill Glasgow retiring next month By Jack Kelleher
In the accompanying picture, Bill Glasgow, Sr., at right in photo, reacts as then-AMOA President Lloyd Williamson helps him try on a jersey from the Chicago White Sox, during the association's 60th anniversary dinner in Las Vegas. The occasion also marked the 10th AMOA show managed by W.T. Glasgow, Inc. Bill is a lifelong fan of crosstown rivals, the Chicago Cubs.Trade show management icon William T. (Bill) Glasgow, Sr., whose events portfolio included the coin-op industry's premier shows, has announced plans to retire as president of W.T. Glasgow, Inc., the firm he founded nearly three decades ago, at the end of next month.
From his start in the industry at the Chicago Hilton & Towers to his tenure as General Manager of Greyhound Foods at McCormick Place and his role as vice president and show manager of the mega Consumer Electronics Show, Bill has been highly-regarded and respected by his clients, colleagues and even competitors for his credibility, honesty and work ethic.
WTG, Inc. started working on AAMA's ASI Show, in 1985. His firm took on management duties for the AMOA International Expo in 1999 and added Fun Expo to the mix in 2000. When AAMA and AMOA created the single show for the industry in 2010, it was WTG, Inc. that earned the management contract for the new event, a role the company continues to serve.
On a personal note, Bill was instrumental in putting me in touch with AMOA that led to my now 14-year employ at the association.
Over the years, Bill Glasgow has been directly responsible for the success of the events that help finance association programs and services that deliver value for members and the industry.
During my first year on the job at AMOA, as the organization transitioned away from the Smith, Bucklin & Associates association management firm and created its own staff and headquarters, cash flow was an issue.
Let's just say then-new AMOA Show manager Bill Glasgow was a patient man, as AMOA owed him several months' pay for his services. Eventually, we squared up with Bill's firm in the literal sense, but AMOA can never truly repay him for the contributions he has made to the association, to the industry and especially the coin-op events he directed.
While sons Bill, Jr. and Brian have strong credentials of their own and maintain long, well-established relationships with customers like AMOA as they take over the reins at the family-owned business, they would be the first to admit their father is a tough act to follow.
Like a golf pro who goes back to his roots as a starter at the local club, Bill has made it known he plans to help out as a floor manager at selected, non-WTG-managed events.
Bill, AMOA wishes you all the best in the future. Thank you for making such a positive impact in AMOA and for your personal support.More
