Nevada facing serious Medicaid O&P coverage threat
AOPA in Advance Share
More than 20 members of the Nevada O&P community joined a December 16th AOPA facilitated conference call to strategize efforts to combat a state Medicaid proposal that would deny coverage for orthotics and prosthetics to Medicaid beneficiaries over the age of 21. The call followed up on a December 1st meeting of the Nevada Association of Medical Product Suppliers (NAMPS) which only three members of the O&P community
attended. At the NAMPS meeting those DMEPOS facilities attending agreed to prepare lists of currently covered Medicaid items not crucial to patient care on which coverage could be eliminated to preserve the crucial O&P coverage. NAMPS is in discussions with state Medicaid officials as to the amount of "give up" needed to avoid the O&P elimination. More

Nevada and Arizona underscore the value of attending the annual AOPA Policy Forum where members can learn about dealing with state and national legislative issues. In addition to the state Medicaid
concerns, the 112th Congress will begin in about a month and with a new Republican majority in the House, comprised of many freshman legislators, making sure patient care providers make the case in person for O&P is just as critical as ever. The 2011 AOPA Policy Forum will be held Monday, April 11 through Tuesday, April 12, in Washington D.C. Members will be briefed on state and national legislative activities as well as prepared for face-to-face meetings with their congressional
representatives. Registration is $125 per person and AOPA has secured a room rate of $249 per night at the L'Enfant Plaza Hotel, a five minute subway ride to Capitol Hill.

The gadgets they're using were not even conceivable just a short time ago-like a computerized prosthetic limb. "I'm an amputee. I work in a slow-motion world. All of a sudden I get to the top of a
mountain; I can go 30, 40, 50 miles an hour down the slopes," said Kirk Bauer, the executive director of Disabled Sports USA. "It is the most exhilarating feeling and free feeling in the world."

AOPA in Advance

As the new year approaches, AOPA wants to remind its members that the Red Flag Rules, issued by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) are scheduled to be implemented effective Jan. 1. Red Flag Rules require businesses and organizations to create a written implementation plan to identify and respond to warning signs of identity theft in financial transactions. While your plan should already be complete and in place, it is not too late
to create one in time for the Jan. 1, compliance date. The FTC has published a template that "low risk" business may use to create and implement a plan that will ensure compliance with the Red Flag Rules.
