Medicare cut delayed, but doctors fear impact

Although Congress passed legislation late last year that will delay for a year a steep cut to Medicare reimbursement payments to doctors, some physicians and their patients remain wary. "There have been multiple 'patches' passed by Congress in the last couple of years that have stayed an anticipated 23 percent decrease to the rate of reimbursement," said Dr. David Christeson, chief physician and administrative officer at Deaconess Clinic. The House version of the medical malpractice reform bill that cleared the Senate this month would protect drug manufacturers from liability in lawsuits. The draft legislation, presented to the House Select Committee on Tort Reform, would also lower the cap on non-economic damages — such as pain and suffering — to $250,000 from each defendant. More
