Diabetes Awareness takes over Times Square
APMA
Share

Because American Diabetes Association data show Hispanics are 66 percent more likely than nonHispanic whites to be diagnosed with the disease, APMA has continued to reach out to Hispanics throughout November's Diabetes Awareness Month to encourage all with diabetes to "Knock Your Socks Off" and visit today's podiatrist. The campaign has made an appearance in Times Square (pictured) and a press release was distributed to national media, which discusses a podiatrist's vital role in the diabetes management team. To further the cause and foster online discussion, @APMAtweets hosted a "Tweet Your Socks Off" event on its Twitter page on World Diabetes Day, Nov. 14, to answer questions related to diabetes and foot care. Visit the diabetes resource page today for customizable diabetes tip sheets, a free poster and other new materials, many of which are available in both English and Spanish.

An over-the-counter device could be just as effective at relieving foot pain as high-end custom fit orthotics that can cost 10 times more, new University of Calgary research suggests. Each year, roughly one million Canadians suffer from plantar fasciitis. The foot ache happens when the plantar fascia — a thick connective tissue that supports the arch and runs from the heel to the ball of the foot — becomes inflamed.
