IBM announces that it has opened the first facility in China to refurbish and resell old computer servers, a market expected to grow to $2 billion in that country by 2014. For decades, the export of electronic waste from the United States, Europe and Asia has raised concerns about the impact on local environments and the low-paid workers who dismantle toxic-laden computers and other gear to recover valuable metals and parts. As a high school English teacher Lauren Elward, 33, blew through hundreds of ink cartridges printing out syllabuses and handouts for her students. Convinced there had to be a cheaper way to replenish ink, Lauren launched Castle Ink in 2005 out of her Greenlawn, N.Y., home. The company retails repurposed ink cartridges for printers and toners from at least seven different companies, including Lexmark, HP and Epson. More
