No Loan Policy to Companies Building New Oil & Gas Pipelines
ASA Materials Market Digest©
USBancorp (parent of U.S. Bank) has caved to environmental activists with a policy of not issuing loans to companies building new oil and gas pipelines. Shale producers are outraged and point out that pipelines are safer and more environmentally responsible than alternative shipping by truck and rail. USBancorp's “Environmental Responsibility Policy” also prohibits lending for new coal mines, any mountaintop-removal mining and coal-fired power plants. "Sensitive" industries that are the subject of additional due diligence include fracking, oil sands and offshore oil production; metals mining; and nuclear and hydroelectric power. What to Expect for the U.S. Dollar and it's Affect on Imports
ASA Advisor©
Recently, the U.S. dollar has been somewhat volatile as both political and economic forces have been buffeting the greenback. Election wins by mainstream parties in Holland and France eased some uncertainty for the euro, which has strengthened versus the dollar, while the Mexican peso appreciated on expectations that changes in trade policy will not be as radical as feared. Going forward, it is likely that changes in monetary policy will be the primary driver of the exchange rate. This will mean that the dollar will appreciate moderately as the Federal Reserve continues to raise interest rates, while other central banks will not begin to do so until much later. In general, an appreciating dollar will make imports cheaper and will provide more opportunity to source internationally, although that will depend on the countries from which one imports. Recruiting Millennials for the Supply Chain
Smarter with Gartner
Ask a child or teenager what they’d like to do when they “grow up,” and working in supply chain is unlikely to feature in their top choices. It’s hardly surprising then to learn that millennials (roughly defined as those born between 1982 and 2000) aren’t exactly lining up for supply chain positions. For a generation that has grown up around “cool” brands like Apple, Facebook and Google, careers in supply chain can have limited appeal, especially when it comes to recruiting for positions like data scientists and analytics talent.
