REMINDER: ASA Safety Award Nomination Deadline Extended

Just a reminder that the nomination deadline for ASA's 2012 Member Safety Recognition Awards, to be presented during NetworkASA 2013 in Washington, D.C., has been extended by a month. Nominations will be accepted through Monday, Sept. 2. Six awards will be presented — three in the distributor category and three in the manufacturer category — and all are based on number of safe hours worked in 2012. EPA Seeks Stakeholder Input — Don't Miss Sept. 12 Call and Webinar

To help increase water efficiency in the commercial and institutional sector, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is announcing its intent to develop a WaterSense specification for flushometer-valve toilets. With this announcement, EPA is releasing a Notice of Intent that describes the efficiency and performance criteria WaterSense is considering including in a draft specification, as well as the technical issues that still need to be more fully defined and resolved.

Next spring, ASA and its independent regional affiliates will release a comprehensive employee and executive compensation report. This will be the first time since 2010 that this kind of data will be available for the PHCP and industrial PVF wholesale-distribution channel. Data collection will begin in early January, and ALL wholesaler members will receive a copy of the final report in exchange for completing the survey questionnaire — at no fee.

Industrial Production Flat in July

Industrial production was unchanged in July after having gained 0.2% in June, according to the Federal Reserve. Manufacturing production declined 0.1%. The output of mines advanced 2.1%, its fourth consecutive monthly increase, and the production of utilities fell 2.1%, its fourth consecutive monthly decrease. At 98.9% of its 2007 average, total industrial production in July was 1.4% above its year-earlier level.

Can US Manufacturing Make a Second-Half Comeback?

Manufacturing conditions in the United States improved in July, according to the Markit Flash U.S. Manufacturing PMI report. Markit's index of manufacturing conditions increased from 51.9 in June to a preliminary reading of 53.2 in July, signaling expansion of the sector at a faster rate. Significant components that experienced gains include output, new orders, and employment, which emerged from a June contraction.

Overall US Job Gain Masks Manufacturing Slide
The U.S. economy added 195,000 net jobs in June, but a gloomy side note dampened the overall employment gain: The manufacturing sector shrunk for the fourth straight month, shedding 6,000 jobs.
