ASA Releases Monthly Pulse Report for September
American Supply Association
ASA member wholesaler-distributors reported a median sales growth of 10.0% for the month ending Sept. 30, compared to the same month last year. Calendar year-to-date, all respondents reported a median sales increase of 5.0% with 4.2% increases in both the PHCP and industrial PVF segments. For the trailing twelve months, respondents reported a median sales increase of 5.0% for PHCP distributors and 3.4% for PVF distributors. Based on the number of respondents reporting, this installment of the report also provides additional detailed performance results by the various demographic categories, including sales volume, primary business emphasis, regions and 16 specific market areas. PHCP-PVF Wholesalers Plan for Year-End Holidays

This winter, the Christmas and New Year's Day holidays are on Thursday. ASA's most recent Monthly Pulse Report sheds some light on how 1 in 4 wholesaler members plan to observe the year-end holidays.
  • By-and-large, PHCP and PVF wholesalers will be open for business Dec. 24 and 31 with special hours and/or reduced staff;
  • Nearly all distributors across the U.S. will be closed Dec. 25 and Jan. 1, although a small number PHCP companies in the Northeast remain undecided;
  • Nearly one-third will be closed Dec. 26 - this is especially prevalent among respondents from Texas and points west to California; otherwise, business-as-usual for the rest of the country;
  • Industrial PVF distributors are more prone to offer on-call and/or emergency service both on and the day after holidays; and
  • 85% of respondents will be open for business Jan. 2.

UMD Researchers Formulate Cyberprotection for Supply Chains

The supply chain is ground zero for several recent cyberbreaches. Hackers, for example, prey on vendors that have remote access to a larger company's global IT systems, software and networks. In the 2013 Target breach, the attacker infiltrated a vulnerable link: a refrigeration system supplier connected to the retailer's IT system. A counter-measure, via a user-ready online portal, has been developed by researchers in the Supply Chain Management Center at the University of Maryland's Robert H. Smith School of Business.

Consumer Prices in US Rise 0.1% as Inflation Remains Muted
The cost of living in the U.S. barely rose in September, leaving inflation below the Federal Reserve's goal as fuel prices plunge in October. The consumer-price index climbed 0.1% after decreasing 0.2% in August, a Labor Department report recently showed in Washington. The median forecast of 84 economists surveyed by Bloomberg called for no change.
