Manufacturing Activity Surges in October
CNBC    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Manufacturing activity expanded last month at the fastest pace since May, driven by demand in the United States and abroad for cars, computers and other goods. The report signals that U.S. factory output, which slowed during the summer, remains a strong player in an otherwise weak economy. A separate report Nov. 1 showed that manufacturing in China, the world's second-largest economy, also grew. The Institute for Supply Management said that its manufacturing index read 56.9 in October, up from 54.4 in September. It was the 15th straight month of growth. A reading above 50 indicates growth. The Manufacturing Mandate, being brought forward by AMT, asks political leaders to establish a strategy of collaboration between government industry and academia. This federal strategy would give incentives toward innovation, research and development in new products and manufacturing technologies; assure the availability of capital; increase global competitiveness; minimize structural cost burdens; enhance collaboration between government, academia and industry; and build a better educated and trained "smartforce."
