Vol. 48 No. 26
Gordon M. Matheson, Ph.D., P.E., P.G., D.GE (UTG, LLC), Laura Reinbold, P.E. (Terracon), Michael V. Smith, P.G., C.E.G. (Earth Systems, Inc.) and Steven D. Thorne, P.E., D.GE (Terracon) have been appointed to the prestigious Council of Fellows of the Geoprofessional Business Association (GBA). The organization established the Council in 1975 to provide guidance for GBA's direction and to pursue other activities its members deemed appropriate. The appointments were announced during GBA's 2018 Spring Conference by W. Jerrold Samford, P.G., chair of GBA's Council of Fellows.
Please join us in congratulating Dr. Matheson, Mr. Smith, Ms. Reinbold, and Mr. Thorne for their appointment into the GBA Council of Fellows.
GBA originally scheduled the 2018 Fall Conference to be in Houston, Texas. Unfortunately, the Houston Omni Hotel was flooded in August 2016 during Tropical Storm Harvey and has since been under reconstruction. Joel Carson, GBA's Executive Director told those attending the Spring Conference, "While GBA would like to support the citizens and businesses of Houston, the Omni notified us recently that they will not make their opening date of August 2018 and instead pushed the opening back to November. While this was inconvenience for our members, we dusted off our contingency plan and quickly signed a contract with the J.W. Marriott Hotel in Nashville, Tennessee. I am excited we will be visiting 'Music City' and we will not skip a beat."

One of the ways your firm can avoid mistakes is through the report review process. GBA's GBA Guide to the In-House Review of Geoprofessional Reports provides step-by-step instructions — as well as overarching concepts — for report writers and reviewers, with a focus on a report's ability to satisfy the contractual obligations it was intended to fulfill; the quality of its technical and risk-management content; and the clarity of presentation.

LESSONS LEARNED POLL RESULTS
In alternate issues of GBA NEWSlog, we ask our readers for feedback on important issues to geoprofessionals, often reflecting the theme of the issue. In our last issue, we asked members what the future holds.
We Asked: Over the next 5 years do you see more challenge or opportunity for your firm?
GBA's Members Optimistic of the Future

Tom Peters, author of "In Search of Excellence," often called the greatest business book ever written, had never done a podcast interview before Mark C. Crowley (keynote at GBA's Spring Conference) spoke with Tom. The podcast is an incredible and truly inspiring discussion.
Peters who just published his 17th book also believes workplace leadership needs some major repairs, and with great wisdom and enthusiasm, lays out a very clear vision for what it must look like.

GBA members pride themselves on actively engaging loss prevention in their practice. They understand that Human error is at the root of all losses. In this issue we offer links to insights on the nature of human error. Let's begin with a reflection on engineering mistakes that led to some of the greatest losses in U.S. history.
Assessment of mistakes often focuses on project teams rather than deeper issues with the firm's leadership. Do not overlook leadership issues when looking for the overarching causes of errors within your organization.
When projects have errors, it is easy to blame poor project management as an all-encompassing root cause. What are the top 10 project management mistakes?
Social media can distract you from your work. Be aware of its impacts on project focus, productivity, potential for errors and so much more.
Ricardo & Barbosa
It has been said that all error is human error. If you accept this premise, then it is up to us to design and embed error prevention methods in our systems of work.
Human error is intrinsically linked to skill-based behaviors, rule based-behaviors and knowledge-based behaviors.
Organizations that want to make a substantial investment in reducing human errors often consider becoming ISO 9001 certified. ISO 9001:2015 sets out the criteria for a quality management system and is the only standard in the ISO 9000 family that can be certified to (although this is not a requirement). It can be used by any organization, large or small, regardless of its field of activity. In fact, there are over one million companies and organizations in over 170 countries certified to ISO 9001.
The New York Times
Until recently, communities suing fossil fuel companies over the costs of climate change have been located on the coasts: cities and counties in California, and New York City. But now, the litigation has jumped inland.
Disruptive forces are driving a vicious cycle of talent shortages, rising human resource costs, and rising compensation costs — all resulting in stagnant productivity and lower profits. This infographic shows how you can reverse that negative cycle by streamlining your operational processes for greater productivity and profitability.
Words of Wisdom
"Haste breeds error and error breeds woe."
