Fighting Infection from Baltimore Sun
Most people come to a hospital expecting to get better. But many don't realize that on average, one in 20 patients admitted to a hospital in the United States will contract an infection during his or her stay. These infections cause a staggering 99,000 deaths per year. And a growing proportion of these infections no longer respond to a wide range of antibiotics. Doctors must turn to more costly antibiotics or ones with more side effects - if they can cure the infection at all. More

Obama: Budget will Commit to Health Reform
from ASHES Addressing a joint session of Congress last night, President Obama said his budget proposal to Congress Thursday will address “the crushing cost of health care” by building on reforms included in the recently passed Children’s Health Insurance Program Reauthorization Act and American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Obama said health reform “cannot wait, it must not wait, and it will not wait another year,” adding that he plans to bring together “businesses and workers, doctors and health care providers, Democrats and Republicans” to begin work on the issue next week. AHA President and CEO Rich Umbdenstock said, “America’s hospitals agree with the President that health coverage for all is essential. If we are to get a handle on costs, we must get everyone covered. Hospitals stand ready to offer ideas and insights about how to make care work better for patients, providers and communities.” Visit this site to view the AHA’s framework for health reform, Health for Life: Better Health.
