Architecture billings rebound in November
AIA    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
After reversing into the negative territory in October, the AIA Architecture Billings Index rose more than three points in November to reach its highest mark since December 2007. Trends in billings by construction sector were more mixed, with residential reporting a solid increase, while commercial was down to its lowest point since last April. Given the slow pace of the economic recovery, firms are understandably pessimistic about the outlook for 2011. More

Pink returns to the bathroom
The New York Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Pink bathrooms were common in homes built in midcentury America. But by the 1970s they were considered as saccharine as a package of Sweet'N Low. But within the last five years, pink has come back into vogue. Eschewing the once prevalent Pepto-Bismol pink, interior designers now advocate flattering rosy hues for new or renovated bathrooms. And manufacturers of bathroom tiles and fixtures have been introducing more pink options. Last month Pantone decreed that hot pink will be the "it" color of 2011. More

Comfort and caution set the tone for home remodeling in 2011
Arizona Daily Star    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
With the economic outlook uncertain at best, consumers are expected to remain cautious in 2011, making only modest improvements in their homes and furnishings. They will buy wisely, if at all, and continue to be economical with space and décor. The emphasis will be on comfort, hominess and "meaningful" spaces that reflect values and evoke cherished memories, with colors and accents that add warmth and a touch of chic. More

Designer purchases spur consumption
TIME    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
When consumers buy a product high in "design salience"—in other words, stuff that looks nice—and subsequently find that the product doesn't fit in with an existing wardrobe or home décor, they're more likely buy more products to accommodate their new purchase. A new study to be published in a forthcoming issue of the Journal of Marketing Research found that consumers become attached to the unique designer item and want to do everything they can to make it fit with their existing environment, so purchase additional, more suitable items. Seating can produce a power boost
Research Design Connections    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Our seated posture influences if we think and behave as if we have power, according to recent studies. The implications for place design are direct. Spaces that allow power posturing, for example, by providing chairs that recline and allow people to place their feet on a table and simultaneously lean back with their hands behind their heads, will encourage behaviors associated with powerfulness. Those Eames recliners around the office are more than just comfortable. They're influencing the mental outlook of all who frequent them. More

Classroom furniture mismatched to students
InformeDesign    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Adolescents grow at different rates, especially between males and females and between different socio-economic groups, yet often classrooms are furnished with only one size of chairs, desks, etc. A study reported in the journal Applied Ergonomics found that in one school district seat height, seat depth and seat to desk height were mismatched for a substantial proportion of students. The researchers recommend specifying multiple seating types for classrooms, especially those with adolescent students, and using ergonomic measurements to assure classroom furniture effectively meets student needs. Slumping demand slowing deliveries
Chicago Now    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The design industry has learned to adjust to the pace of business that was reset in 2008 and the ensuing recession. There are spenders and there are buyers, but not as many as suppliers need in order to staff up and stock up. Consequently, companies have gradually and consistently stopped stocking and re-buying/re-manufacturing as soon as they run out of certain items, and waiting times for fulfillment of new orders get longer and longer. The challenge for buyers will be to adjust selections to what's ready to be delivered—or understand that a long wait is likely. More
