Kadie Yale writes, "I became enamored with color theory and psychology in graduate school. While studying the history and theory of graphic design (a subject I have also taught), I began to wonder why Dr. Seuss held such reverence in our minds. Although he published his most famous works between 1937 and 1960, his books are still beloved today and, in many cases, have been passed down through generations."

Beyond being essential to tying a design scheme together, colours can have a huge effect on our psychological well-being as well. Based out of Denmark and Sweden, Lookofsky Architecture seems to have gotten the memo in this eye-popping renovation of a 1920s apartment for a couple in Stockholm, Sweden. The new design optimizes the existing space by adding elements such as a built-in, multifunctional walls for storage and seating – all punctuated with pops of cheery yellow.

This is not the first time Archstudio reinvented an archetypical courtyard-style siheyuan as a mixed-use rental venue for events and overnight stays. But Layering Courtyard in Beijing is perhaps the most tech-forward, exploiting facial-recognition software, and intelligent controls that allow guests to book the seven suites online and check in by code scan. Developed by the boutique bed-and-breakfast brand Hutel, the 5,700-square-foot facility encompasses three rectangular structures set parallel to one another and connected via glass-box walkways that skirt bamboo courtyards. The structures edging the property—once a brothel, later a bakery—date to the early 20th century, while the middle one is new build.

At the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital in Iowa City, they believe it can. The hospital’s Blooming Wall was created with that belief in mind, designed to greet hospital patients and visitors and help lift their spirits.

For architects and interior designers, it can be challenging to find the pulse of a particular organization to leverage in a workplace design. “We can’t just go in there acting like we know the DNA,” observed architect Michael Lutz at a recent Metropolis Think Tank talk hosted by the Atlanta office of Gensler. To do so might risk damaging a company’s culture. But if wielded sensitively, disruption—that is, to break the status quo without tearing the fabric of things—can be a positive motivator, Lutz explained.
