Architecture for Humanity responds to crisis in Haiti

As other organizations seek to address the immediate need of Haitians, Architecture for Humanity has begun plans for the long term reconstruction effort to help restore the country to normalcy. They are partnering with AIDG, Yele Haiti and other local groups by supplying them pro bono construction and design professionals, setting up community housing resource centers and support in the design and building of earthquake resistant structures. And they have developed a seven point plan for upgrading and restoring in a sustainable manner the country’s building stock. More

With the economic downturn easing, the restaurant industry is expected to show gradual improvement in 2010, according to the National Restaurant Association’s 2010 Restaurant Industry Forecast released earlier this week. Among the trends cited in the forecast, restaurant operators continue to step up their efforts to go green, investing in energy-efficient equipment and fixtures, using recyclable materials and reducing their water use. Green initiatives not only help manage costs, they can also drive traffic. Four in 10 consumers say they choose restaurants based on their conservation practices. More

Rise in vacancy rates continues, but pace slows

The ongoing rise in vacancy rates in the U.S. office, industrial, and retail markets slowed significantly in the fourth quarter of 2009, according to the latest analysis from CBRE Econometric Advisors (CBRE-EA). "Across property types the consistent story is that while vacancy rates are not in decline, they performed better than expected in the 4th quarter," says Jon Southard, director of Forecasting, CBRE-EA.
