Remodeling market to show improvement in 2010
Custom Home Online    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Although the remodeling market has certainly suffered during the housing downturn, an uptick in business has begun, as homeowners opt to stay put but still desire improvements, industry experts told reporters during a press conference at the International Builders' Show. Boosting activity will be green initiatives to improve energy performance, adapting homes for aging-in-place Baby Boomers, and refurbishing foreclosed structures. More

Metropolis Magazine    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Architects and designers are contributing to the relief effort for Haiti, and with good reason: Since much of the damage could have been avoided with strictly enforced building codes or earthquake-proof structures, the architecture community will play a key role in ensuring that this disaster does not happen again. The key is understanding what consumers in this segment value and how to speak to them. The Technology Strategy Board and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council are to invest nearly £5 million to fund the development by British companies of new design and decision tools to help in the construction of greener buildings. "At present, designers cannot easily predict the impact of design choices, particularly in the early, conceptual, stage of a project when so many key decisions are made. The products that will be developed in these projects will dramatically improve access to good, integrated design tools. This will have a significant impact on the performance of the final building," said Richard Miller, who leads the Technology Strategy Board's work on low impact buildings. More
