How's Business? ASID Can Tell You, But We Need Your Help
ASID is seeking interior design panelists to join our monthly survey known as the Interior Design Billings Index ("IDBI" for short). This index tracks monthly performance for billings, inquiries, and product sales in the interior design industry, and serves as an indicator of the economic strength and direction of the industry by region and specialty. By filling out a secure, anonymous, five-question survey once per month, you can demonstrate your leadership in the industry. As an incentive, panelists get exclusive market intelligence on key issues, plus a custom annual report comparing your reported billings to the aggregate. Sign up here.

Pace Remains Steady, But Fluctuates by Region
Business conditions remained steady for design firms in December with a Billings Index score of 52.3, while the Inquiries Index remained unchanged at 56.8. Across the nation, the design industry expanded at an irregular pace, with Midwest firms reporting accelerated growth over the past several months, and firms in the South slowing compared to early fall. Business conditions remained weak for firms in the Northeast and West as indexes dipped below 50, and may be attributed to the slower pace of housing demand in recent months. Looking forward, the design industry remains positive about near term outlook. The six-month business conditions index score of 72.3 for December suggests continued expansion, and is six points higher than the score in December 2013.

Interior Design Licensing Still Being Sought in Oregon
Daily Journal of Commerce
Efforts to create a state-approved licensing program for interior designers have stalled while advocates revamp proposed legislation in hopes that it will be more palatable to Oregon lawmakers. A bill proposed last year, Senate Bill 1521, was backed by Interior Design Collaborative-Oregon and would have required interior designers to obtain a license to work on commercial spaces. It gained some traction, but failed to advance out of committee.

Luxury Housing Growth Mirrors Growing Wealth Gap
Archita Datta Majumdar
A new report from Oxfam shows that half of global wealth is held by 1 percent of the world's population. By next year, they will own more wealth than the other 99 percent combined. This uneven distribution of wealth has had its ripple effects, and even the housing industry has felt the tremors.

The Potential of Partnerships
Most design firms face a common challenge in their early days: Their portfolios aren't extensive enough to readily get work. Without experience, it can be tough to convince clients that a young firm is right for the job. One way to shake the stigma is to create strategic partnerships. Whether it's with another, more established firm, with a university on a research project, or with a nonprofit on pro bono work, the right partner can help a rookie firm get that first bit of professional momentum.

System Check
Design is first and foremost a service industry, and what clients are thinking and feeling about that service is hugely important, particularly higher-end clients. Some pros find that the earlier they can discover what homeowners think and feel about the project experience, the more likely they are to have a wowed client when they leave.

Over-the-Top Amenities: Sweating the Details
The New York Times
Home, it would appear, is where the hamam is — at least for the superrich. For along with the Olympic-size pools, children's playrooms designed by experts in early-childhood development, basketball courts, demonstration and catering kitchens, lounges or "great rooms" with fireplaces, curated libraries, guest rooms, full-size gyms, spinning rooms, and yoga studios, the hamam (pronounced hah-MOM) has joined the amenity package, as the brokers say, of the luxury development market.

L.A. Living in the Future: Home & Design
Los Angeles Times
Southern Californians are obsessed with the design of their homes, the details of how they are furnished, and the patches of green they plant and water. There are few rules; they are free to mix colors and lacquers, woods and carpeting, antiques and flea-market finds. They reach for new technology as soon as it's on the market. So how will all this play out in the future?

Mastering the Curbless Shower
Custom Home
There are several reasons to lose the shower curb. A curbless shower means cleaner lines in the bathroom: there's less visual clutter, there is greater ease of use with the shower, fewer nooks and crannies to clean, and the shower becomes highly accessible. The methods for achieving this vary, and this article covers just one technique, but it's the one builders like best, and the one they're designing and building for their current projects.

The Decorating 'Rule' Interior Designers Say It's Time To Break
The Huffington Post
According to interior designer Isla Schmidt, what may be the biggest design rule of all has actually become the most overrated. Maintaining perfect symmetry has long been associated with the composed sophistication that makes rooms so appealing. Using traditional symmetry, however, isn't always the best design strategy, Schmidt contends.

Where Was Sustainability on the IBS Show Floor?
Do building product manufacturers think sustainability is baseline now, so ordinary, so "baked in" that they just don't need to talk about it anymore? Have many building product manufacturers just given up on sustainability, or decided they don't need it as part of their corporate branding or product strategy? Or, worse, have building product manufacturers decided builders don't care?

Builders' New Power Play: Net-Zero Homes
The Wall Street Journal
Net-zero homes, which generate more electricity in a year than they use, have long been viewed as a niche product for the affluent who can afford custom homes. The chief problem is that it is expensive to get a home to net-zero status, and many customers aren't willing to wait several years for their electricity-bill savings to cover the thousands of dollars they would have to spend on net-zero features such as solar panels and energy-efficient windows, doors, and appliances.

How Green Is the State of the Union?

During President Barack Obama's State of the Union speech, he mentioned that "every three weeks, we bring online as much solar power as we did in all of 2009." For many people this was a bit of a surprise. However, according to Stephen Ashkin, president of The Ashkin Group, Americans also may be surprised at just how far the United States has come regarding green and sustainability issues.

Three Keys to Designing Hotel Room Ambiance
From humble hotel rooms to luxury penthouses, hotel owners are re-thinking their guest rooms, with design directed by the guests themselves. The future will bring highly personalized spaces, transformable furniture, and technology-infused rooms. Hotels must really hone in on their guests' needs, from the activities they may participate in within the hotel and in the surrounding area, to more core factors like simple demographics — though they must bear in mind that decor will play a major part in a guest's first impression.
