Defining the Science of Design
Interiors & Sources
As we continue to track ROI, communicate "value per square foot," and standardize our metrics on productivity, healing, and engagement, it is clear that the demand for systematic, quantifiable proof of the value of design is on the rise and here to stay. But relying on empirical evidence alone — the stuff of observable science — can lead design down a dangerous path. Designers are not actually scientists, nor are most of their clients, and well-intentioned teams run the risk of practicing a sort of pseudoscience.

The 1% Impact
Can you spare one percent of your time? Five minutes per day, or 20 hours per year, doesn't sound like much, but lending just one percent of your billable hours toward pro bono work can make a palpable impact, and will demonstrate the power of design reaching its greatest potential.

The ASID Foundation is proud of its partnership with The 1% program, an organization that works to connect nonprofits in need of design assistance with firms willing to donate their time to help. ASID members and firms contribute $10 million annually in pro bono services through this program, but why stop there? If you are interested in getting involved, you can be matched with a qualifying nonprofit that needs your help through The 1% program. Already involved in pro bono work? Gain the visibility and credit you deserve by documenting your time with The 1% program.

Tech Takes Center Stage at Kitchen and Bath Industry Show
Editor at Large
One trend stuck out above all at this year's Kitchen and Bath Industry Show: technology. From a camera in the oven to allow a baker to watch cookies in real time on a smartphone, to devices that can monitor the weight of a carton of milk and automatically add it to a grocery list when it becomes too low, innovation was key at this year's KBIS.

Buildings Should Be Functional, Not Merely Daring
People need shelter and better-designed places. But buildings as art, and avant garde design? Not so much. Improving the overall quality of the built environment, which has been mostly untouched by architects, is a major opportunity. The opportunities will continue to evolve, too. More remodeling projects are undertaken than new house builds, and well-built and well-designed structures of all types have more potential for refurbishing and remodeling, as opposed to demolition.

The Associated Press via Detroit Free Press
The trend that designers are calling the new feminine isn't a return to an excess of florals, shabby-chic lace, and other clichés of feminine decor from a decade ago. Instead, feminine style has evolved into an aesthetic that's classic with a soft, eclectic spin.

A Whiter Shade of Green: Aging in Place, Sustainably
Last September, as Boulder, Colo. architect David Barrett was wheeled into surgery on his ruptured Achilles tendon, the skies opened up over his hometown. When a flood filled his North Boulder rental home with a foot and a half of mud and water, he decided to demolish it and pursue an idea he and his architect wife had talked about for a number of years — that a house could become a tool in the process of aging, rather than an albatross.

Rethinking Workplace in Healthcare
Clinical areas and the supporting spaces for patient care are established by the Facility Guidelines Institute, and are the adopted code requirements for healthcare projects in the United States. For clinical environments, the guidelines are detailed. But for the supporting staff spaces, the guidelines are consistently vague, and often indicate statements like "adequate office space for staff must be provided." The resulting workplace mimics an office environment that does not necessarily support a team-based approach to care.
