Consumers' home priorities shifting

Now that the economy seems less dire, consumers are beginning to let themselves think ahead to better days, including somewhat bigger homes, according to the Better Homes and Gardens (BHG) 2011 Consumer Preferences Survey. Home affordability and energy efficiency are still top of mind, the survey found. While consumers are feeling more optimistic about the economy and are starting to plan home improvements or their next home purchase, they are still operating on a value mentality. That is, they still want to get the most bang for their buck and are still cautious about spending. More

Is That Rug One in a Million?
This January, GoodWeave USA launched its One in a Million campaign to create awareness and build demand for the handmade rugs the nonprofit certifies as child-labor-free. The campaign draws its inspiration from the estimated one million children exploited in the carpet-making industry when GoodWeave began its work in 1994, and the one million or more knots that typically go into a handcrafted rug. In 2010, GoodWeave certified four percent of handmade rugs imported to the U.S., while the new campaign seeks to capture a six percent market share by year-end, bringing the organization ever closer to its ultimate goal of ending child labor in the industry. Merging high design with new ideas about senior living and lifestyles, at least for the wealthier end of the swelling Baby Boom generation, BOOM, with more than 300 residences designed by leading and emerging architects, aims to make aging more enjoyable with not only architecturally inventive residences but also with an entertainment complex, boutique hotel, wellness center and spa, all connected by pedestrian-friendly pathways and plazas and a meticulously landscaped desert environment on the outskirts of Palm Springs. Conceived at first for older gays but now expanded to a wider market, BOOM is being marketed for anyone who is "design-oriented" and thinks differently about aging. More

Influence of workplace design on human capital

In a chapter in the soon-to-be-released Oxford Handbook of Human Capital, Jacqueline Vischer discusses the influence of the physical work environment on the human capital of organizations. Noting that collaborative workspaces are not likely to be used for "knowledge creation and sharing" when they are not conveniently located, she suggests group spaces will be most effective when they serve groups of 4-8 people, and those people have control over their physical environments (e.g., lights, temperature), as well as freedom from "unwanted distractions." Observing that the work environment is a critical element in effective use of and access to its own human capital, Vischer questions why it is taking businesses so long to see the value of investing in workspace. More

Claim against USGBC sparks discussion on LEED legal challenges
