Consumers' home priorities shifting
Custom Home Online    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Now that the economy seems less dire, consumers are beginning to let themselves think ahead to better days, including somewhat bigger homes, according to the Better Homes and Gardens (BHG) 2011 Consumer Preferences Survey. Home affordability and energy efficiency are still top of mind, the survey found. While consumers are feeling more optimistic about the economy and are starting to plan home improvements or their next home purchase, they are still operating on a value mentality. That is, they still want to get the most bang for their buck and are still cautious about spending. More

Is That Rug One in a Million?
This January, GoodWeave USA launched its One in a Million campaign to create awareness and build demand for the handmade rugs the nonprofit certifies as child-labor-free. The campaign draws its inspiration from the estimated one million children exploited in the carpet-making industry when GoodWeave began its work in 1994, and the one million or more knots that typically go into a handcrafted rug. In 2010, GoodWeave certified four percent of handmade rugs imported to the U.S., while the new campaign seeks to capture a six percent market share by year-end, bringing the organization ever closer to its ultimate goal of ending child labor in the industry. For copies of the new One in a Million brochure or GoodWeave's Rug Sourcebook, please write to

Don't fear the user
Fast Company    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
With all the publicity around the power of social networking, crowd-sourcing and viral marketing, the mantra in the product design world these days is "the user is king." But there's a problem with this user-centric approach: It doesn't work. As cutting-edge companies like Apple and IKEA have learned, great brands lead users, not the other way around. The way to build brand loyalty is to be visionary, not ask users what they want. More

Wayfinding in healthcare
Healthcare Design magazine    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Patients, visitors and staff all enter healthcare facilities with varying levels of stress, emotion and tolerance of mental calculation. It is up to the designers, planners and architects to incorporate their understanding of space into the facility. In a three-part blog series for Corbin Design, research psychologist Colin Ellard, author of "You Are Here—Why We Can Find Our Way to the Moon but Get Lost at the Mall," delves into how the design and architecture world has a unique understanding of layouts and how there is a potential for great insight and strides that could be made if these concepts could be paired with the behavioral science world into quantifiable, empirical data. Are charrettes old school?
Harvard Design Magazine    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail
In the recent issue of Harvard Design Magazine, Dan Willis, a member of the architecture faculty at Penn State, examines the role of charrettes in today's architectural firms and degree programs. Perhaps the most telling thing he found is that the definition of a charrette has changed. Most professional architects now equate charrettes with interactive brain-storming sessions, not the infamous "all-nighters" that were once associated with the charrette. More

Influence of workplace design on human capital
Research Design Connections    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
In a chapter in the soon-to-be-released Oxford Handbook of Human Capital, Jacqueline Vischer discusses the influence of the physical work environment on the human capital of organizations. Noting that collaborative workspaces are not likely to be used for "knowledge creation and sharing" when they are not conveniently located, she suggests group spaces will be most effective when they serve groups of 4-8 people, and those people have control over their physical environments (e.g., lights, temperature), as well as freedom from "unwanted distractions." Observing that the work environment is a critical element in effective use of and access to its own human capital, Vischer questions why it is taking businesses so long to see the value of investing in workspace. Interiors & Sources    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The suit claims that USGBC is fraudulently misleading consumers and misrepresenting the energy performance of buildings certified under its LEED rating systems.
