Multifamily starts see increase, for now
Multi-Housing News    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
According to the U.S. Census Bureau and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, homebuilding starts increased 2.8 percent in January 2010 to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 591,000 units, led by a jump in multifamily construction. Though both single-family and multifamily starts increased for the month, single-family starts posted a 1.5 percent gain, while multifamily starts posted a 9.2 percent gain, to 107,000 units. But neither single-family nor multifamily starts are likely to increase at a dramatic pace in the months ahead. More

The power of design to remake the world
AIA    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Architects and designers should focus on designing not spaces but rather situations that modify and improve individual behavior, Richard Farson told the audience at the 2010 AIA Grassroots Leadership and Legislative Conference last week. Presenting the ideas from his book, The Power of Design: A Force for Transforming Everything, Farson urged his listeners to think about how design can impact institutions and society. "You design not just buildings, but organizations," he said, "not just houses, but family life, not just rooms or fashions, but experiences, not just interiors, but relationships." More

The façade consists of panels of tinted glass, ranging from bright green to bold red. Because the same color scheme was applied indoors as well, it's easy for users and visitors approaching the building to identify specific activities going on inside. More

Work is a home away from home
The Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail
Over the past decade, wireless broadband and BlackBerrys have meant that more workers have ditched the office in favor of working from home. And this has presented employers with a problem—how to cultivate a culture of presenteeism in a world where being present is not always essential. The answer? Commission interior designers to upgrade office space. The result? Unintentionally, perhaps, offices are beginning to look more like living rooms. More
