10 must-have features in today's new homes
Housing Zone    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Americans want smaller houses and they are willing to strip some of yesterday's most popular rooms, such as home theaters, from them in order to accommodate changing lifestyles, consumer experts told audiences at the recent International Builders Show. Large kitchens that are open to the main family living area, old-fashioned bathrooms with clawfoot tubs and small spaces such as wine grottos are design features that will resonate today. More

Architecture billings drop in January
Builder Online    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Hopes were high that business at architecture firms would begin to pick up in 2010, but the latest survey of architects around the country suggests that the industry may be in for a longer than expected recovery. Architecture billings fell sharply in January to an index score of 42.5, down from 45.4 in December, according to new figures from the American Institute of Architects. "Projects are being delayed or canceled because lending institutions are placing unusually stringent equity requirements on new developments," said AIA Chief Economist Kermit Baker. More

Beyond the beauty shot
Metropolis Magazine    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
We all know that rooms and buildings can only be fairly judged when they are experienced. But it's largely the beautiful pictures that make winning projects. While some competitions ask for detailed descriptions that reveal each project’s complexities, many award-winning interiors gain recognition solely based on gorgeous photos. This is a hopelessly outdated approach at a time when designers are struggling with environmental, social, and materials choices to make our rooms healthy and safe as well as to reduce our carbon footprints.
