Early Bird Price Ends 2/28: Design to Lead Summit and ASID Legislative Symposium

Early bird pricing will end on Feb. 28 for the 2015 Design to Lead Summit and the ASID Legislative Symposium. Both events will be held in Washington, D.C., in mid-April and a combo ticket is available through February 28. The ASID member price for the combo ticket is $300, and for non-members is $450. Register today.

The 2015 Design to Lead Summit will take place on Monday, April 13, and will provide the next generation of design leaders with the education and skills needed to succeed as they take on next step management roles. Attendees will gain an introduction to key leadership competencies, expand their networks, and learn from the diverse experiences of experts via keynotes, panel discussions, interactive breaks, and a closing reception. Attendees will receive at least five continuing education hours (pending IDCEC-approval). Learn more and register today.

The 2015 ASID Legislative Symposium will be held April 14-15 and will provide the training and knowledge needed to preserve practice rights at both the state and federal legislative level. Attendees will earn up to .4 CEUs in breakout sessions focused on building codes and standards, lighting design, the evolution of interior design in the building industry, and national updates on interior design-related legislative activity; will learn to engage in the legislative process and receive unique advocacy training led by Soapbox CEO Christopher Kush; and will engage with legislators on the technical and scientific aspects of the interior design profession and how it contributes to each state's economy during ASID Hill Day. The 2015 ASID Foundation Chapter Challenge Is Underway

The ASID Foundation's Chapter Challenge is an annual fundraising program that supports the important work of the Foundation. Each year, the Society's 48 chapters are challenged to meet an assigned fundraising goal, with the aim of raising $100,000 to support the programs and projects the Foundation sponsors annually. Among these endeavors are the The 1% program, the Transform Grant, the Foundation Scholarship and Awards Program, and the Leadership Academy, and more. National Honors Award Nominations Accepted Through March 24

Each year, ASID recognizes the exemplary achievements and outstanding service demonstrated by highly engaged members, chapters, student chapters, and Industry Partners. In its 40th anniversary year, ASID needs the assistance of its members and chapters to identify exemplary candidates for the following awards:
  • Medalist/Honorary Medalist (formerly Chapter Medalist)
    Recognizes members or non-design professionals who have demonstrated outstanding service to an ASID chapter.
  • Educator Medalist
    Recognizes members who have provided significant contributions to the body of knowledge that supports the profession of interior design.
  • Chapter Community Service Award
    Bestowed upon an ASID professional chapter for outstanding community service.
  • Industry Partner (IP) Merit Award
    Recognizes Industry Partners who have demonstrated significant contributions to the Society or to a chapter.
  • Lifetime Award (formerly Lifetime Membership Award)
    Recognizes and rewards individual members who have made significant contributions to ASID over the course of their membership and career.

ASID Is Seeking Education Proposals — Submit by March 15
ASID
ASID Education is embarking on a new approach to enhance our educational library through a call for education proposals. This method will cast a wider net, giving qualified candidates the opportunity to submit proposals to be considered for inclusion in the ASID library of educational programming. All accepted proposals will be approved for continuing education credits (CEUs).
    Deadline for submission: March 15
    Open to: ASID Practitioner and Industry Partner Members
    Submit to: Karol Kaiser, kkaiser@asid.org
Programs and presenters will be utilized at various ASID local and national educational events, at live industry events, and online.

Interior Design Announces Top 100 Giants for 2015
Interior Design
Looking at the data from its annual survey of the top 100 Giant firms, Interior Design magazine concludes, "We are in a period of not just reliable business growth, but genuine expansion." Total fees grew 12 percent, to $3.3 billion, beating predictions by a handy five percent. The Giants now expect growth to $3.5 billion.

DFA's Survey Reveals Positive Thoughts on Industry Growth

The Decorative Furnishings Association has revealed the results of its very first public survey. Growth is a common theme, with more than 40 percent of responding industry leaders reporting additional hiring. Nearly 70 percent of respondents felt that business revenue would increase by more than five percent in the next year.

Business Conditions at Architecture Firms Soften in January

Billings at architecture firms declined modestly in January, as the Architecture Billings Index score fell to 49.9. While this was the first decline in firm billings in nearly a year, it is minute enough that it is likely to be more of a blip than a trend. Inquiries into new work remained strong, and more firms reported an increase in the value of signed design contracts in January.

Fannie Mae Predicting Softer Multifamily Markets

Fannie Mae is mostly optimistic about the state of the multifamily industry in 2015 and beyond, but it doesn't foresee quite the same kind of boom as in the past few years, mainly because some markets are going to suffer slowdowns in the wake of the rapid rush to develop new properties. Among the 340,000 new units that Fannie Mae predicts will become available in 2015, most of them will be concentrated in a limited number of U.S. metro areas.

Commercial Flooring White Paper Explores Reflectivity of Flooring

Daylighting is increasingly becoming a green building design strategy, and LEED v4 now recognizes the benefits of high light-reflectant flooring in the IEQ Lighting Quality Credit. Research suggests that boosting the reflectance values of flooring will allow more light — from either artificial or natural sources — to bounce off the floor, and enable the available light to illuminate the space more efficiently. A new white paper, "Daylighting and Flooring: Don't Overlook the Issue of Reflectivity," issued by Armstrong Commercial Flooring, provides insight on leveraging the reflectivity of flooring to reduce energy consumption in commercial structures.

Sustainability: We're All in It Together

Environmental sustainability initiatives are not often associated with access and disability. A number of strong links do, however, exist, and further discussion in this area is certainly merited. Providing buildings that are designed to be universally accessible now means that the need to refurbish or rebuild later is greatly diminished. Limiting building works to the construction and maintenance of the building, and minimizing unassociated further refurbishments will significantly reduce the embodied energy subsumed in the building and its total lifecycle environmental footprint.
