Residential outdoor living trends for 2011
Custom Home Online    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A recent survey by the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) pinpointed the residential outdoor living and landscaping design elements that are developing in 2011. Homeowners' landscape design and outdoor living plans are still scaled down somewhat because of economic concerns, but they're not eliminating the elements that make outdoor spaces comfortable, attractive and usable. They still want seating, lighting and cooking features, but they're willing to do without fully outfitted kitchens or audio/video entertainment systems. It's only the high-end clients who are moving forward with such expensive luxury features and finishes. More

Facility managers guide to designing green interiors
FacilitiesNet    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Just because sustainable design is "common practice" doesn't mean that there is common knowledge, expertise or understanding of the various decision-making thresholds for facility managers. With or without certification, many facility projects now assume sustainable design. There was a time when the only green product options would rapidly inflate the budget on even the smallest job. Now products with a high recycled content are often cost neutral, including ceiling tile, carpeting, sheetrock and aluminum. Facility managers can create healthier environments by choosing from a variety of products with low VOC emissions, such as paints, adhesives and fiberboards. Any decision about specifying a product or building systems component that may add cost or change performance should involve the facility manager. More

Home and Housewares show features design for a small planet
The New York Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Walking the aisles of the International Home and Housewares Show last week, New York Times reporter Joyce Wadler was struck by the prevalence of brightly-colored, hi-tech appliances and gadgets, sized for "single-service," and boasting their green and/or recyclable materials. Who are the people these products are designed for, she wondered, whose their primary source of sustenance appears to be coffee and cupcakes? More

Incorporating the Starbucks experience into design for education
Fast Company    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail
Today's students want to attend an institution that will not only provide them with knowledge, but actually define them. When Miami Dade College selected Perkins+Will to design new learning environments, the firm knew the school needed to become a brand that went beyond educational needs (just as the Starbucks brand is more than just a cup of coffee). With that in mind, they developed 14 prototypical spaces using a 30' x 30' (900 square foot) classroom as a baseline component, creating a "Lego system" of spaces that can transform into educational spaces for 30, 50, 80, 100 and 200 students, along with three main "menus" from which to choose levels of technology, furniture, and infrastructure. GSA study examines implications of mobile work for workplace design
Research Design Connections    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The GSA Public Buildings Service has comprehensively reviewed the "benefits and challenges of adopting a range of mobility strategies" and outlined mobility-related workplace design principles. The report states that mobility programs have clear benefit for space utilization. It concludes by highlighting the need to develop mobility programs after considering the specific needs of particular work forces: "There is no universal ratio of employees to hoteling stations . . . or standard size of team collaboration rooms . . . Agencies should evaluate the nature of their work and the needs of their employees in order to prepare for mobility in their workplace." More

Carpet runners no longer an afterthought
Staten Island Advance    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Sometimes in home design, the simplest element can have a big impact on the total look of a room. Such is the case with carpet runners. Often an afterthought in designing a space, runners increasingly are being unfurled throughout the home to add color and pattern in smaller areas where a full-size rug may not fit or an extra touch is needed to add interest to a room. Marijuana dispensary wins award for innovative design
NBC Bay Area    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The San Francisco Patient and Resource Center (SPARC), a medical marijuana dispensary, has won the 19th annual Will Ching Design Competition, which honors outstanding commercial design by firms of five or fewer individuals. Owner, Eric Pearson, said he wanted to "remove the stigma around cannabis and make people feel marijuana is normal." The interior incorporates minimalist oak tables and benches to create a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere, but its most notable feature is a cascading grid of steel and glass patterned loosely on marijuana's DNA.
