Academics Put Price Tag on 'Distinctive Design'
Architects' Journal
Researchers at the London School of Economics claim to have come up with a means of calculating the "economic premium" generated by "distinctively designed" buildings. They estimate the economic value of good design to be "large." One of the novel aspects of the researchers' means of assessing value is the way it isolates the financial benefits of design from other factors that could push up prices.

New Projects Index Suggests Positive Outlook for Near-Term Ventures
ASID
The ASID Interior Design Billings Index (IDBI) dipped by 3.5 points in February to 54.3, while the index that foreshadows changes in construction spending remains above 50, indicating an aggregate increase in design industry billings. Activity in February was strongest in the Midwest, registering a score of 65, followed by the South at 57.7, the West at 52, and the Northeast at 43.2.

Based on the ASID monthly billings survey, there was positive performance across all sectors in February, with the exception of healthcare. The U.S. Census report on construction showed spending declining in January, although it has risen year-over-year. The decline may be attributable to the harsh winter weather through early 2015.

The ASID new projects inquiry index rose from 60.2 in January to 62.5 in February, suggesting a positive outlook for potential work in the near term. Single family construction billings have been on an upswing for the last two months, but multi-family billings have declined during the same time period, posting a score of 47.5 in February.

Can Your Home Be Hacked?
Remodeling
Not too long ago, the biggest concern over high-tech home theft was neighbors stealing cable TV or jumping on your Wi-Fi uninvited. Today, with the breadth of connected products available, the potential for unauthorized access to the home is greater, and goes beyond mischievous kids turning your lights on and off remotely. Without the right layers of protection in place, a high-tech home could be vulnerable to digital or actual break-ins.

Stuff: When Less Is More
Harvard Business Review
Today we use far fewer materials than we once did to get the same things done — a phenomenon known as "dematerialization." Paradoxically, this efficiency seems to drive up overall consumption. As efficiency rises, so does affordability, putting ever more products within reach of ever more consumers. As a result, the amount of resources extracted for every person on the planet has skyrocketed even as the global population has multiplied.

Six Myths of Sustainable Design
RTKL via The Huffington Post
Green building has not gotten as much traction as it should, given its many benefits. Recent reports show that LEED-certified buildings can cut greenhouse gas emissions and water consumption by half, while costing 25 percent less to operate, enjoying nearly 30 percent higher occupant satisfaction, and attracting lower interest rates. If green is so great, why does it account for only one percent of one percent of the total U.S. building stock? Here are six common misperceptions about sustainable design.

As "busyness" dominates modern society, shopping has become a therapeutic form of relaxation for many customers. These customers are tired of the "noise" and wish to enjoy a calming, simpler retail ambience. Simple techniques such as color alignment (color that links to the product or culture of the brand), a neutral color palette, and fresh greenery create spaces that customers won't find distracting or overwhelming. In more and more stores, there is no decorative suspended lighting to obstruct customers' views, and floor space is open.

Health Facilities Management
A current trend in the healthcare industry is a move away from further expansion in downtowns, and toward less densely populated areas to provide better access for patients (easier, less costly commutes) and lower development costs. In many cases, this means new construction. However, many healthcare organizations are investigating further cost reductions by eschewing new construction in favor of renovating existing commercial and retail buildings into medical office buildings, wellness centers, outpatient clinics, and other healthcare facilities.
