Kitchens and baths regain some attention in home design
AIA    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Results of the AIA's Home Design Trends Survey for the fourth quarter of 2010 indicate that the number and size of kitchens and bathrooms have been increasing recently, reversing the trend toward downsizing that followed the economic recession. Residential architects reported growing popularity in pantry space and recycling centers in kitchens, while interest remains strong in integrating family space with kitchens. Sustainable design is the dominant theme for popular kitchen products. Similarly, bathrooms designed for adaptability and incorporating universal design features remain very popular. Topping the list of bath products were water conserving toilets and LED lighting. More

Changing classroom design
College Planning & Management    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Education is changing on many levels—the addition of technology, the advent of online education, the accessibility and ubiquity of information, the comfort level of students and professors in using technology, the delivery of education, the role of the professor. All this is leading to student-centered teaching, which is influencing changes in classroom design. What exactly those changes are, it seems, are still somewhat nebulous, but tomorrow's classrooms will be more focused on student interaction that educator delivery. More

Vacation- and investment-home sales hold steady
Realtor    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Despite extraordinarily tight credit conditions for purchasing a second home, the market share for vacation and investment homes held steady in 2010, according to a recent survey by the National Association of Realtors. The typical vacation-home buyer in 2010 was 49 years old, had a median household income of $99,500 and purchased a property that was a median distance of 375 miles from his or her primary residence. Lifestyle factors continue to be the primary motivation for vacation-home buyers, and vacation homes tend to be located in rural areas. More

Demand for design services still treading water
Contract Magazine    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
For the second month in a row, the Architecture Billings Index (ABI) shows a sluggish demand for design services, as February totals only show a 0.6 point increase (50.6) from the previous month (50.0). Kermit Baker, economist for AIA, said the latest score indicates the industry "seems to be treading water." The 2011 data has yet to replicate the strength of business conditions experienced within the final months of 2010. Despite the plateau, AIA experts remain positive that the market will pick up by the end of 2011. More

Art can affect patient anxiety and treatment costs
Research Design Connections    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail
article
Researchers investigating the art viewed by psychiatric patients determined that certain types of art appear to decrease patient agitation and reduce their use of some medications. There was an overall reduction in the average medication per day prescribed on days with art compared to days without art, with the lowest reduction occurring on days when a realistic nature photograph was displayed. The study projects that the money saved on reducing the use of medication could be between $10,000 to $30,000 annually per facility. More

Giving medical office bathrooms a makeover
Medical Office Today    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Medical office bathrooms not only get a lot of use, but they also speak volumes about a medical practice. Outmoded fixtures and furnishings—or even the lack of good design—can give off the impression that the physicians simply don't care about the comfort of the staff or patients, while cracked tiles and poor lighting can be downright dangerous. In some offices, bathrooms have not been brought up to ADA compliance, which leaves the business exposed to legal action. More

Custom Home Online    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article

House trends: Is this the end of the living room?
DIY Life    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The National Association of Home Builders recently released a special report that details several home features that will likely become the norm by 2015. One of the more unexpected summaries in the report is a theory that living rooms will vanish, or be incorporated into other rooms. Of course, applying this report to a home depends heavily on the definition of a living room. We grew up with living rooms as formal spaces that were usually reserved for company—they didn't have televisions, and typically had nicer furnishings and decor. More

Fledgling design industry takes wing in El Salvador
The New York Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
After more than a decade of civil war, El Salvador can now claim to have a stable democracy. It can also claim a fledgling design industry, thanks to Harry and Claudia Washington and their small community of colleagues. Born and bred Salvadorans, the couple, who met as students at the University of Applied Arts in San Salvador, are the principals of Due Estudio, one of the first Salvadoran design firms to establish a presence outside Central America.
