Re-thinking the center store design
Contract Magazine    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
While perimeter sales in grocery stores are booming, center-store sales actually have declined on a same-store basis. Designers have an opportunity to make the center store a bit more, well, less monotonous. Nielsen has just unveiled a webinar that shares strategies and views on how best to leverage in-store innovation to generate more desirable shopper behavior, such as more frequent store visits, larger basket rings, or greater customer loyalty. It's about turning design into dollars. More

Healthcare Design Magazine    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
As designers, it is critical to recognize the vital role that the family can play as part of the care delivery team to help aid in the patient's healing process. The family's involvement in the patient's care can ultimately help to shape the floor plan of the unit as well as the design of the patient room. Healthcare Design magazine presents an online, three-part series examining a model for incorporating the family in to the patient room. More

Architectural billings holding steady
Dexigner    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The first quarter of 2011 has seen the Architecture Billings Index (ABI) remain virtually unchanged and right at, or slightly above, the break-even level. "Currently, architecture firms are essentially caught swimming upstream in a situation where demand is not falling back into the negative territory, but also not exhibiting the same pace of increases seen at the end of 2010," said AIA Chief Economist, Kermit Baker, PhD, Hon. AIA. "The range of conditions reported continues to span a very wide spectrum with some firms reporting an improving business environment and even ramping up staffing, while others continue to operate in survival mode." Future looks bright for active adult market
Builder Magazine    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Despite reports from builders that conditions in the active adult market continue to be far from "good," market analysts believe there is reason for optimism. Although 54.6% of buyers in these communities count on the sale of a previous home to finance the down payment on their new home, that number has been dropping. In a recent survey, 89 percent of Boomers said now is a good time to buy a home, and 55 percent of Boomers said that they will move when they retire. Plus, the customer base is only going to grow: There are more than 10,000 new 60+ year olds every day. More

Brain health or brain dead?
Architect Magazine    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The centerpiece of a downtown revitalization project, the Lou Rovo Center for Brain Health in Las Vegas has garnered more jeers than cheers. Commanding the edge of the emerging cultural campus is a distinctly Gehry building, draped and wrapped with a mountainous metal-clad skin, faced in shingled panels and punctured with a grid of windows. The voluminous structure—which serves as a revenue-generating event space as well as a space for patient programs—is joined by a partially clad steel trellis to the more traditional structure for the main clinic. Gehry took pains to create an interior environment that doesn’t evoke a medical setting. But is it patient-friendly? You decide. More

World Interior Design Network    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The new Gary and Mary West Senior Wellness Center in San Diego was designed to provide a state-of-the-art, one-stop health and wellness hub for low-income seniors. It combines areas for socialization and activities on the main floor with the Center for Healthy Aging on the second floor. The building recently received LEED Gold Certification for its sustainability practices, such as 22 Solatube and Sun Optic daylighting skylights that infiltrate the interior space with natural light. According to the architects, the building uses approximately 25 percent less energy than current California energy code requirements and 51 percent less water, compared to a typical building of this type. Wood 'a returning bathroom trend'
Wickes    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Individuals looking to develop a contemporary bathroom design for their washroom may like to consider installing wood features, as these are seeing a resurgence in popularity at present. This is according to Cheryl Gurner, creative director of Bathrooms International, who explained that the natural material is returning to people's homes, but "with a modern twist".
