LEED for Healthcare now open for public comment

USGBC announces the opening of the second public comment period for its LEED for Healthcare green building rating system. LEED for Healthcare was developed to meet the unique needs of a 24-hour operational facility, including process water use related to medical equipment, rural facility locations, sensitivity to chemicals and pollutants, patient and staff health, and many other issues that are unique to this building type. The second public comment period is open for 30 days and will close on Tuesday, May 18th 2010 at 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time. More

Hotels chains try to out-green each other

U.S. hotel companies are competing to out-green each other nowadays. In the past two weeks, two major chains have announced ambitious environmental goals. Marriott International announced that it had retooled its 31-year-old Bethesda, Md., headquarters to win LEED Gold status and pledged that within five years, 300 of the chain's 3,300 hotels worldwide would receive LEED certification. San Francisco-based Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants announced last month that it aims to become "the first lifestyle boutique hotel company in the U.S." to attain 100 percent Green Seal certification at the silver level for its 50 American hotels. In other green news, a recent survey by, an apartment search site, found that many people in the market for an apartment are now actively looking for green features in their dwellings. The survey found that 88 percent of respondents said the environment is an important issue, affecting way they live and even search for and select apartments. A roughly equal number, 89 percent of respondents, said they would prefer to live at a "green" apartment community, and more than 25 percent would pay more in rent to save money on energy costs.
