Decoding the pavilion architecture of Shanghai World Expo 2010

As many as 100 million visitors are expected to attend the Shanghai World Expo 2010, made up of 189 pavilions, created by all but seven of the countries in the entire world. In the design of each, there's not supposed to be any politics or international posturing. But really? Fast Company has drawn up a handy guide to pavilion architecture to “decode” what these buildings are really saying. More

Hospitality Design magazine recently announced the sixth annual HD Award winners and finalists in categories ranging from fine dining restaurant to luxury public space to hospitality debut and student project. All of the winners and finalists will be honored at an awards presentation and reception on Wednesday, June 9th at the Hudson Theatre at the Millennium Broadway Hotel in New York City. Projects will also be published in the May/June issue of HD. More

Obama administration urged to take action on American building stock

The United States Green Building Council and national energy, housing, environmental and real estate organizations have joined together to sound the alarm on America's building stock while citing the many ways in which the Obama Administration can step up on the energy efficiency and sustainability of America's multifamily and commercial buildings. The group commissioned a study of the administration's oversight of more than 30 existing federal programs worth $72 billion to enhance efficiency in commercial buildings and multifamily housing with no new legislation needed. The study found an extensive array of options which it says the Obama Administration could begin implementing immediately without having to seek new funds or authority from Congress. More

NAR's pending home sale index heads skyward in March

The National Association of Realtors reports that its pending home sales index surged upward in March, up five percent over February and 21 percent over March 2009. The obvious driver pushing the index upward was the federal tax credits for homebuyers that expired at the end of April, but the NAR predicts that despite a slowdown in sales during the immediate post-tax credit period, there are encouraging signs that the market will be able to stand on its own feet during the balance of 2010.
