For years, designers and others trying to encourage environmentally responsible behavior have discussed space users' carbon footprints with them. New research indicates that that may not have been a good idea. While sharing carbon footprint-type information with committed environmentalists may spur them on to even greater feats of conservation, this is not the case with people who are not as determined to preserve the environment. In the study, negative ecological footprint feedback significantly decreased pro-environmental behavior of participants who did not base their self-esteem on environmentalism. More

Florida interior designers won't be deregulated

The Florida state legislature has killed HB 5005, a bill that would no longer require interior designers who work on commercial buildings to hold a state license. "The rejection of this legislation ensures that all public buildings in Florida will continue to be designed by trained professionals who adhere to the highest forms of both style and public safety," says Patty Blaser, president of the National Council for Interior Design Qualification, Inc. (NCIDQ). More
