Interior design vs. Urban design
Contract Magazine    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Most people would say that these two disciplines (interior design and urban design) are at opposite ends of the spectrum of scale, of skill sets, and of personal areas of interest. But perhaps, speculates Joan Blumenfeld, Interior Design Director at Perkins + Will, at closer inspection, they are more similar different. More

Combating infection through good design
Core77    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The number of Americans who die every day from hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) is equivalent to one jumbo jet plane crashing every day. Hospitals are under a lot of pressure to rectify the situation, but fixing the problem is a struggle. Fortunately for designers, this is the space where they excel: applying an understanding of human behavior to create solutions that work within our imperfect world. This led a team of designers to combine antimicrobial copper with design-influenced behavior change to develop a more effective solution. More

MESSAGE FROM ASID
Fraudulent Resume Emails on the Rise

At a time when graduating students and emerging professionals are electronically sending their resumes to prospective employers, fraudulent emails requesting employment consideration have been detected. Several ASID members have received such emails, in which the resume attachments contain viruses that may damage your computer. Take the necessary steps to separate your resume from fraudulent requests. ASID recommends that you:

• Call in advance to obtain correct contact information.
• Send a personal greeting, as opposed to something generic.
• Send a preliminary email, as a "heads up" to the recipient.

Employers, if you have experienced any suspicious e-mail correspondence, please contact the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) at www.ic3.gov or (877) 382-4357.

The newest amenity in high-end hotels: Real art
Hospitality Net    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Hotels always have had some form of décor, of which artwork is a small or large part, but today's luxury hotels have put a premium on higher value contemporary art by artists with a strong or growing standing. The most expensive art tends to be placed in the more public areas, where security is tightest, but even guest rooms now feature original artworks that cost more than the frames. The original art is the result of a rethinking of what the luxury experience entails: Wealthy people are accustomed to being around art. More

A study conducted by TOTO found that one of the most prevalent trends with consumers today is a strong desire for innovative products, but only if they have real-world benefits, like saving water and money, reliability that leads to peace of mind for the homeowner or better performance. MEDcottage: Affordable care or storage for the elderly?
TreeHugger    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The Reverend Kenneth Dupin just wants to make it easier for people to take care of aging adults and keep them close to home; he has developed what is essentially a hospital room in what looks like a garden shed. Unlike a typical "granny flat," Dupin's design includes "smart" robotic features and round-the-clock Internet monitoring. Some see it as an affordable solution to home health care; others think it's inhuman. More

Home prices rising in more metro areas
Realtor    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A growing number of metropolitan areas are experiencing price gains from a year ago, while most states have seen healthy gains in home sales from the first quarter of 2009, according to the latest survey by the National Association of Realtors®. NAR President Vicki Cox Golder said there’s been a change in market psychology. "Buyer confidence is back, and home buyers have long-term views. Most people see housing for what it is—shelter that provides social benefits and is also a good long-term investment." More

Finding profits in the new economy
Kitchen & Bath Design News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
This month will be marking the dawn of a new era for kitchen design, which has clearly transitioned from years of uncompromised, "more-is-better" luxury to reflect homeowner spending patterns and design preferences more in tune with the realities of today's economy. That premise should come as no surprise to seasoned industry professionals, who've long been aware that kitchen and bath design always changes with the tenor of the times. Nevertheless, it still bears noting as kitchen and bath specialists try to wrap their arms around a market that's a far cry from what it was in the industry's boom years - and, for many designers, far less profitable. That, too, is certainly no surprise. More

Home fix-ups on the rise, but experts urge caution
The Detroit News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Springtime is becoming home fix-up time again. According to a new estimate from the Joint Center for Housing Studies at Harvard University, Americans plan to increase their spending on home improvements nearly five percent this year, the first rise in activity since the recession. In some cases, the urge to splurge on a home is the result of pent-up demand from worried homeowners who sat on their wallets during the worst of the recession. Fixing up also is on the rise as sales recover, and new owners want to feather a new nest to their liking. More
