Designing for patient demographics
Medical Office Today    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Although it may seem obvious, physicians rarely consider patient demographics when designing their office space. The design for one medical practice, for example, was dictated by the way the cleaning people arranged the chairs—close together and in rows that made it difficult for the practice’s older patients to sit down. It’s important for designers, therefore, to hone in on patients’ needs when meeting with their clients. More

Economy keeping residents in place
Multi-Housing News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Respondents to an online survey commissioned by the National Apartment Association found that both renters and homeowners are not eager to make any changes in their housing status within the next year. "People aren't looking forward to making a change. Whether you own or rent, most people are saying that they want to stay, and I think that's a factor of uncertainty of what's happening in the economy," said NAA president Douglas Culkin. The survey also found that the decline in home values, tight lending conditions and reports of continuing foreclosures have made consumers cautious about purchasing a home. More

The Wright solution to accessibility
PVA    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1949 and completed in 1952, the approximately 2,500-square-foot, three bedroom Kenneth Laurent House sits on its own acreage gently sloping to a small creek bordering the property. What makes this Wright work unique is that it was designed as an accessible residence for a wheelchair user, long before codes and standards for such construction existed in the United States. Wright's intuitive vision and close cooperation with the Laurents resulted in a fully accessible home. More

Is McDonald's new facelift a waste?
Contract Magazine    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Let's face it—McDonald's isn't the créme de créme of restaurants. We go there for cheap eats and speedy service, not ambience. But all that may change as the McDonald's franchise seeks to update it's classic look with a more modern, fashionable image. McDonald's executives hope to remodel 400 to 500 locations across the country in 2010. And the corporation recently pledged $1 billion to this initiative. More

To showcase Miyake's unstructured Bilbao bag, Japanese design firm Nendo created a display area comprised of rail-thin steel rods, each varying slightly in height, meant to resemble "a field of prairie grass." The bags fall over the rods willy-nilly, as if they were "flowers in a light breeze." More
