Restaurants putting less on designers' plates
USA Today    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The stagnant economy and younger diners' sophisticated food tastes are driving a "less-is-more" approach among restaurateurs. The less-is-more movement also dovetails with a major dining trend: upscale comfort foods, which tend to be better suited to a more casual atmosphere. More

Kitchen and bath designers seeing signs of improvement
Kitchen & Bath Design News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Results of a new Kitchen & Bath News survey of 235 kitchen and bath designers paint a picture of an industry still struggling, yet slowly but surely beginning to shift gears from "hold" mode to "planning" mode—and, in some cases, even to growth mode. Nearly half of all survey respondents (47.2 percent) said they are already seeing some improvement, while another 12.2 percent noted that they are seeing a lot of improvement already. Of the remainder, 21.7 percent expect to see improved conditions later this year, and only 18.9% don’t expect things to get better until 2011. More

The Mosaic PATHWAY (Portable Adaptable Temporary Hotel With Alternative You-ses) from destination design firm WATG won the grand prize in this year's Radical Innovation in Hospitality competition sponsored by The John Hardy Group and Hospitality Design magazine. WATG invented Mosaic as entirely flexible, comprised of individually configured, modular prisms, outfitted as needed as spas, salons, guestrooms, mini-homes (multiple prisms such as a kitchenette and bedrooms), or tented villas (an addition to a luxury resort at peak season). For adventure travel and "voluntourism," hybrid vacation and volunteer work experience/disaster relief, Mosaic hubs and prisms accommodate volunteers and then remain as housing for local communities. Retro design can easily give a home distinctive style, but tread carefully
The Canaduan Press    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Going retro has never been easier. Whether you love '50s space-age style, '20s art deco or design from any bygone era, vintage furniture and home accessories are everywhere today. Flea markets and antiques shops are stocked with vintage treasures or trash, depending on your perspective. Yard sale season is in full swing, bringing Naugahyde recliners and vintage Tupperware into the daylight after decades of slumber in attics and garages. And at a slew of websites, from niche marketers to the catchall that is eBay, you can find real vintage pieces and endless reproductions. But while it's simple to get your hands on decor from the past, it's more complicated to use it well. More

Sizing up an A&D firm's carbon footprint
Bloomberg BusinessWeek    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A new Excel-based software tool developed by AIA reveals the environmental impact of a firm's commercial projects. Firms input a few particulars about every project (even those in conceptual stages) such as projected annual energy usage, gross square footage, building type, and current energy standards (to establish a baseline). The program assigns a three-part score for the firm's complete portfolio, not just a few exemplary projects. Firms wishing to use the tool will first have to sign on to AIA’s 2030 commitment. More

Kitchen and bath designers looking to maximize space in their next design—and maximizing profits at the same time—are transferring their cabinetry expertise to creating master closet systems. If a designer is proficient at kitchen design, the thinking goes, much of this knowledge translates to wardrobes.
