Interior design billings remain strong in April

ASID firms reported positive growth in April, as shown by the ASID Interior Design Billings Index score of 57.1. ASID Index panel members reported increased billings for the fourth consecutive month. The index dipped slightly from the high in March of 62.5 but remained well above 2011 levels. The Inquiry Index for April fell to 56.5, compared to 65.8 in March, perhaps signaling a slowdown in the coming months. More

California governor revises flammability standards

In an effort to protect public safety by reducing the use of toxic flame retardants, California Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. has directed state agencies to revise flammability standards for upholstered furniture sold in the state. "A growing body of evidence suggests these chemicals harm human health and the environment," Brown said. The guidelines in place now will be updated to reflect modern manufacturing methods that can lower the use of harmful chemicals while meeting safety standards. More

ABI drops again in May

The Architecture Billings Index had a significant drop in May 2012. The American Institute of Architects reported the May ABI score was 45.8, following a mark of 48.4 in April. This score reflects a sharp decrease in demand for design services. "For the second year in a row, we're seeing declines in springtime design activity after a healthy first quarter," said AIA Chief Economist Kermit Baker. More
