Work environment ranks high for job satisfaction
Research Design Connections    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Successful businesses are embracing a new way of working that allows unprecedented flexibility while delivering results. Today's workforce can operate from virtually anywhere: at a company or home office, at a coffee shop or convention center, in the air or on the road. The folks at Skype, who have dubbed this flexibility "the Living Workplace," recently underwrote a survey of 1,000 technology-empowered workers in the United States on the future of work and the workplace. When investigating factors related to job satisfaction, researchers identified the following issues: salary (55 percent of businesses with remote workers), the quality of your work environment (37 percent), having flexibility to work at home/outside the office (33 percent), the quality of your line manager (29 percent), having flexibility to decide how your work is done (28 percent), and flexibility of working hours (27 percent). When they are in the office, these "work anywhere" workers care about their surroundings. More

On the heels of a sizeable decrease in April, the AIA Architecture Billings Index (ABI) slowed even further in May. The new projects inquiry index was 52.6, down from a mark of 55.0 in April, its lowest level in almost a year and a half. "Whatever positive momentum that there had been seen in late 2010 and earlier this year has disappeared," said AIA Chief Economist, Kermit Baker, PhD, Hon. AIA. More

Canadian Interiors    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Fraser Health Authority in Vancouver, B.C., adopted an evidence-based design philosophy in its renovation of the Arch Hospital Maternity Unit. The Authority's desire was to implement a contemporary residential atmosphere family-centered care maternity facility allowing for family involvement during the birthing process. The Labour Delivery Recovery Antepartum (LDRP) room layout accommodates a designated family area and in-room overnight sleeping accommodations for partners or family members. Highlights of the project include a residential feel and warm color palette; a softer lighting strategy; sheet flooring; integrated equipment in millwork; an infant-monitoring system; and access control. Truth about accessibility requirements
Multi-Housing News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
As HUD continues to spread the word about multifamily accessibility requirements, one would think that the multitude of headline-grabbing lawsuits should be the most effective eye-opener for the multi-housing industry. At least two attorneys who represent multihousing clients have heard from reliable sources that up to 50 percent of the nation's multifamily portfolio is non-compliant with FHA requirements. While the ADA is what most people think of when it comes to accessibility, when it comes to living spaces, like apartments, it's the Fair Housing requirements that can get you into trouble. More

Coping with bulb backlash
The Charlotte Observer    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Worried they'll soon be forced to buy compact fluorescent lights (CFLs), some consumers have seized on what they say is a bright idea: stockpiling old-style incandescents. Functionally, compact fluorescent bulbs have come a long way since their early days. Now there are lights that work with dimmer switches and three-way lamps. There are CFLs where the curly spiral is enclosed in a traditional teardrop-shape bulb. And CFLs come in warmer tones than the initial greenish glare they cast over the lighting landscape. The EPA has a web page that addresses most questions and concerns about CFLs and the federal regulations that begin to take effect January 2012. More

High anxiety dispelled by design
DCmud    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
With wait times in metropolitan emergency rooms averaging seven to eight hours, patients' stress and anxiety levels are exacerbated by a lack of "positive distractions."
