Child safety campaign warns of home design hazards
The Jerusalem Post    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail
One of the reasons why 75 children die and 15,000 more are taken to emergency rooms during the two months of summer vacation in Israel is that homes are not designed with youngsters in mind, according to Beterem, the National Center for Child Safety and Health. The voluntary organization held an online press conference recently to announce a public campaign uniting child safety activists with interior designers and architects. More

Interior Design Canada restructuring to strengthen role
National Post    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The association of registered interior designers, Interior Design Canada, is undergoing a restructuring to be completed this fall that will strengthen its role as the voice of interior designers across the country. The restructuring alters Interior Design Canada from a loose affiliation of seven provincial associations to a single entity representing nearly 3,000 designers nationally. Representatives from each provincial association, along with five more chosen from the membership, will form a new IDC board of directors, with Susan Wiggins, currently acting director, as executive director and Vancouver interior designer David Hanson as president. Custom Home Online    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
According to the latest Home Design Trends Survey by the American Institute of Architects (AIA), houses and lots in the United States are continuing to shrink, as is homeowners' desire for high-end features and amenities. What's growing is a wish for greater accessibility within the home, which goes hand in hand with an increased interest in more open floor plans and layouts that allow flexibility to accommodate Americans' evolving lifestyles. Can an all-glass office building really be considered green?
TreeHugger    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Some of the world's most prominent "green" skyscrapers, including New York City's One Bryant Park (the LEED Platinum Bank of America skyscraper) and the New York Times Tower, wear the mantle of green with transparent façades. But there is a high environmental cost to all that glitter: increased energy consumption. Until new glazing technologies make technical solutions more affordable, many experts suggest that we should collectively end our infatuation with heavily glazed, all-glass buildings. More

Designing schools in a spiky world
Fast Company    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Urban theorist Richard Florida posits that the new globalism presents us with a world that is not "flat" but "spiky." The spikes are dense urban centers, which house more than half of the human race. And in many of these urban centers, the educational system is in distress. We need to give more attention to how design can provide learning centers that are more engaging, safe and sustainable. What a difference a chair cushion makes
Research Design Connections    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A study published in the journal Science found that negotiators sitting in soft chairs did not drive as tough a bargain as ones sitting on harder chairs without cushions. The researchers conclude, "First impressions are liable to be influenced by the tactile environment, and control over this environment may be especially important for negotiators, pollsters, job seekers, and others interested in interpersonal communication." Who decides where credit is due?
Harvard Design Magazine    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Architects and designers often are surprised—and not happily—that news stories about their projects do not mention them by name. Christopher Hawthorne, architecture critic for the Los Angeles Times, ruminates on the vicissitudes of design and credit in the current issue of Harvard Design Magazine. More

Squaring the light bulb
Inhabitat    Share    Share on
FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
If we want to make lighting more efficient, perhaps we should start from the beginning: with the shape of the light bulb. Illumitex, a startup based in Austin, Texas, manufactures square LED bulbs that are supposedly cheaper, more efficient and more practical than typical round bulbs. The bulb's lumens can, according to Illumitex, hit 80 percent of the area needed by office workers, compared to 31.5 percent from standard round bulbs. More

A curving roof 'bounces' light into a dark home
The New York Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Tim Hill is changing what it means to live in a "lighthouse." Rather than a tall tower by the sea, Mr. Hill's is the Kensington Lighthouse, a two-story home wedged between a large tree and the 4-meter, or 13-foot, wall of an adjacent building. He and his late partner, Dominique Ng, developed “this idea of 'sunshells'—for the light-catching curve of the roof to bounce light down into the interior.” The interior has a spare, Asian feel, influenced by Mr. Hill's childhood in Japan, where his father was a diplomat.
