Healthcare reform and its impact on seniors housing
Multi-Housing News    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail
article
New healthcare reform may cause some pricing instability for seniors housing facilities but assisted living facilities will likely experience the most long-term benefits from the legislation, according to a new report issued by Marcus & Millichap Real Estate Investment Services. A major problem confronting the seniors housing sector is that demand comes from the elderly, who have not been able to sell their homes for four years. More

Merchandise Mart eases consumer access to showrooms
Furniture Today    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The Chicago Merchandise Mart is making it easier for consumers to work with designers to shop the building's hundreds of furniture showrooms. The Mart says it will help shoppers who don't already have a designer to connect with one of 38 designated designers to gain access to the building. Officials said the program does not represent a change in policy—access is still only through designers—but should make it easier for consumers to shop there. More

Lawsuits filed over EPA lead rules
Residential Design Magazine    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A coalition of housing industry groups plans to file a lawsuit against the federal Environmental Protection Agency for removing the "opt-out" provision from its Lead: Renovation, Repair and Painting rule. The opt-out provision, which expired July 6, let consumers allow contractors to bypass extra preparation, clean-up and recordkeeping requirements in homes where there were no children under 6 or pregnant women, thus avoiding additional costs. The EPA is standing by its decision, saying lead can be a health hazard to occupants and visitors of older homes, regardless of age. More

Fear of falling leads to falls among elderly
Buildings    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Two new studies outline factors that, in addition to decreased mobility, contribute to a fall: rigid blood vessels in the brain, poor gait and the fear of falling. Senior citizens who are anxious about falling will typically walk very slow and wide (as if on ice) or feel uncomfortable without holding on to something. This change in gait is common in unfamiliar public places, and the shift in body movement could literally throw someone off balance. Facility managers can help reduce the chance of someone falling by making sure their buildings are as worry- and risk-free as possible. Proper and proactive maintenance, marked inclined, handrails and identifying risks are all simple steps to preventing a fall. More

Red accentuates the negative
Research Design Connections    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Research into associations North Americans have to the colors red and green found the strongest associations were to red. The researchers determined that "red was positively associated with failure and general negative words, and was negatively associated with success and general positive words." Green, which is opposite red on the color wheel, did not prompt such strong reactions and was positively associated with success words only. More

InformeDesign    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A review of studies of indoor environmental quality in office and health care environments found that while there are best practices suitable for both environments, there also are some important differences. Designers should examine the research in both settings before making determinations about suitable solutions. More
