Inhabitat    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Perhaps the greenest home is the one already built. This 9000 square foot building was carefully upgraded and preserved with a light modernist touch. More

Hotel gift shops go glam
Los Angeles Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The days when taking home a souvenir from your favorite hotel meant a bad logo T-shirt or golf visor are long gone. In an era of global sameness, they have opted to offer unique, localized experiences. More

Design a chair and print it
Fast Company    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
3-D printing is among the most futuristic technologies employed by today's designers. Using computer-aided drafting software, Dutch designer Bram Geenan translated Gaudi-like gravity-induced curved chains into a digital model, adding algorithms to create an equally sound structure for the backrest. In collaboration with Freedom of Creation, an Amsterdam-based research and design studio that specializes in 3-D printing technologies, Geenan then turned his CAD image into a refined piece of furniture. Consumers seek comfort and refuge this fall
The Editor at Large    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Given economic challenges, global events and an overall mood of uncertainty, the trend is well-worn finishes, especially gray and washed effects that mix well together, according to trend tracker Julie Smith Vincenti. "Reclaimed woods, linen fabrics and neutral palettes are key," she said. "Decorative accessories bring elegance, materials diversity and texture—and create an easygoing look that immediately evokes a feeling of relaxation, restraint and nostalgia. Ultimately, it conveys a more simple time in a sophisticated way.” More
