Are We on the Cusp of a Visual Renaissance?
Michael J. Berens
Is a picture worth a thousand tweets? Twitter, which rose to fame by mass-distributing text messages of no more than 140 characters, recently redesigned its interface to make it easier to share images and video with followers. Hardly earth-shattering news for designers, but it may be a harbinger of a larger trend: the ascendancy of visual culture. Advances in technology have made it easier to both send and receive images and video. This has made visuals the communication tool of choice for just about anyone who has something to share.

Why the Modern Bathroom Is a Wasteful, Unhealthy Design
The Guardian
It is hard to find something that we actually got right in the modern bathroom. The toilet is too high (our bodies were designed to squat), the sink is too low and almost useless; the shower is a deathtrap (an American dies every day from bath or shower accidents). We mix up all our bodily functions in a machine designed by engineers on the basis of the plumbing system, not human needs. The result is a toxic output of contaminated water, questionable air quality and incredible waste.

Ideo's Digital Scoreboard Reveals How LEED Buildings Really Behave
Fast Company's Co.Design
One of the persistent criticisms leveled against LEED, the U.S. Green Business Council's popular green-building certification system, is that it doesn't track a structure's energy consumption over time. The Dynamic Plaque, a freestanding digital dashboard built by the U.S. Green Building Council in conjunction with the design firm Ideo, aims to address this problem.

Why Sustainable Furniture Matters
Sourceable
The dazzling array of design blogs and home makeover TV shows only reinforce the idea of interior design as a form of consumption: out with the old, and in with the new, to stay on-trend and up to date. This attitude toward furniture would mean that we are becoming far less likely to pass on quality heirloom pieces to future generations. Instead, cheap, disposable sideboards and lounges just go straight into landfill.
