Double-digit remodeling spending increases projected for 2011
Residential Arhcitect    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Home improvement activity and remodeling spending are expected to improve, showing increases on an annual basis, by the end of 2010, according to the most recent Leading Indicator of Remodeling Activity (LIRA) released by the Remodeling Futures Program of Harvard University's Joint Center for Housing Studies (JCHS). The findings suggest suggests that returning homeowner optimism and confidence in an economic recovery is driving growth in home improvement investments—and not just in necessary replacement projects and energy retrofits, but also in remodels and upgrades. Pressure mounts on USGBC to open LEED to SFI, other standards
Interiors & Sources    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
In a letter to the U.S. Green Building Council, steered by Congressmen Kurt Schrader (D-OR) and Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., 79 members of the U.S. House of Representatives, representing 35 different states, have urged the organization to "accept all credible forest certification systems for qualification under the LEED Rating System," including the Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI Inc.). On the heels of the letter from this bipartisan group of members of Congress, USGBC also received a petition with nearly 6,000 signatories calling for LEED recognition of all "wood and paper products certified to independent, respected and credible standards including SFI, ATFS, CSA, FSC, and PEFC." In addition, six members of Congress have sent their own letters urging an inclusive LEED policy. More

Designing away the ADA
NPR    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
In an interview with Robert Siegel, the senior host of NPR's popular "All Things Considered," Monica Ponce de Leon, dean of the College of Architecture and Urban Planning at the University of Michigan, comments that "if we embed the notion of designing for the many within everyday design, the same way that we're discussing sustainability today, where we're thinking every building should be sustainable," then the day may come when the wheel chair symbol as a sign of accommodation may become obsolete. She already sees that change in her students: "In academia, design for the disabled has been thought of as the requirement that we need to fulfill in order to get accreditation as a school. . . . our students are actually much more interested than their faculty in having design for the many embedded within every aspect of their projects." Raising the bar on pet décor
The New York Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
There was a time when pets were pets. They had bowls and beds, and that was about it. Then something changed. Today, pets have become family members. For some animal lovers, that means not just buying aesthetically pleasing pet supplies, but creating their own animal-friendly design solutions to complement their human-centric décor. Designers need to consider integrating pet-friendly design into the home. More

Workers' perceptions of collaborative environments analysed
Research Design Connections    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A comprehensive analysis of physical factors perceived by workers to support collaborative work examined workers’ attitudes towards three types of collaborative spaces. The study also looked at factors that workers consider distractions, such as travel routes, proximity of copy stations and noise. Among other findings, the researchers determined that floor plates in which meeting rooms are distributed around the core of the structure or at the core and in the corners of the floor plan are perceived to be most supportive of collaborative work and least distracting to other workers. The researchers collected a great deal of information to support their conclusions, so workplace designers can feel comfortable utilizing them. More

Hopeful signs for housing remain
NAHB    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
While much of the country is in the middle of the hottest summer in recent memory, residential construction appears to be just entering an early spring—with hopeful signs of more meaningful growth ahead, according to the National Association of Home Builders. NAHB is forecasting that residential construction will slowly improve throughout the second half of this year and into next year, bolstered by continued low mortgage rates, affordable housing prices and an improving jobs market. Poughkeepsie Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article

Beautiful new design work at Indira Gandhi International Airport
Core77    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Once you land in JFK, you know you're in New York. Sadly this is not because the terminal is filled with expressive designs celebrating Gotham; rather, you know because it's filthy, illegal cabdrivers are beckoning to you from across the street, and the legal hacks are occasionally getting out of the stopped cars to scream at each other face to face. Indian design firm Incubis Consultants, tasked with designing the interior of Indira Gandhi International Airport, came up with a much more pleasant installation that would remind you where you were. Called "Expressive India," the design is comprised of enormous cast-resin hands performing mudras, the hand gestures from classical Indian dance forms. More
